What is this pale pink seafood dish served with an egg yolk?
I came across this dish at a Japanese-style restaurant. It had pale pink, translucent pieces arranged around a raw egg yolk, with sesame seeds and seaweed on the side. Does anyone know what the seafood is or what this dish is called?
What are these white balls with red centers served with chili dipping sauce?
I tried these recently and they were really good. They are small, round, white balls with red centers and were served with a chili dipping sauce. Does anyone know what they are called?
Found this old handwritten Chinese manuscript while clearing out a study
I found this while sorting through an old study at home. It appears to be a handwritten Chinese manuscript, possibly from the Qing dynasty, although it has not been professionally dated.
I have no idea who copied it or how it ended up here. The vertical calligraphy, aged paper, and red punctuation marks are beautifully preserved.
When and why did white bread become associated with social status in Britain between the 17th and 19th centuries?
I am interested in how white bread came to be viewed as a higher-status food in Britain during the early modern and industrial periods.
Was its status mainly connected to the cost of producing finely milled flour, the difficulty of removing bran, or contemporary beliefs about health and refinement?
I would also like to understand whether this association changed as industrial milling made white flour more widely available during the 19th century.
I am particularly interested in evidence from historical cookbooks, household accounts, medical texts, advertisements, or academic studies.
