Hey Dad, I am burnt the fuck out

On paper my life looks great. I'm financially stable, I've got a solid career, a townhome (mortgage), a paid-off car, a sweet dog, and a partner of 7+ years. The corporate grind is wearing me down a little more every month. I can't stand my team, I don't believe in the product, and I'm stuck in a satellite office, cut off from everyone. Today something finally gave.

I'm so tired. I can't just quit with the economy the way it is, because the mortgage would eat me alive. Part of me wonders if this is a midlife crisis and I should buy a van and drive across the country, but I know I'd hate it the second something went wrong. And with the whole US/Canada situation, I'm stuck in a country none of my friends, family, or girlfriend want to visit, so it's on me to work out the logistics if I want any in-person time. My house has been for sale for 7 months and there have been no bites, the housing market is also a mess. I want to go home, I just... fuck. Is this really all there is? I'm 35 and I feel 65. I am jaded, angry, and completely burnt out.

Going solo sober at 35

I am going solo to push myself out of my comfort zone, but sober because I'll know no one, and I would be flying in so wouldn't even know where to start with procurement and testing.

Am I starting my midlife crisis?

Update to build a bar - Progress

This is an update to my original post where I was asking for help on how to make joints and general advice.

It's just been a lot of work and I am traveling for work currently, so thought I would share.

  1. The first image is AI generated and is what I was aiming to build.
  2. Is creating a half scale model using AI generated angles.
  3. Is where I said fuck that, and figured I would make a square then go from there
  4. is when I started to learn about angles and that wood is in fact not straight. 8 feet 2x4's are not 8 feet
  5. I started working with shelving, this was a failure
  6. Learning how to NOT do decking, I has figured if I had just filled in the deck with scrap wood that would all work. No. Do not do this. Level the ground and frame it properly, it will probably take a couple hours more but fuck a duck if it's not level.
  7. Getting the rest of the deck wood. I do not own a truck.
  8. First bbq of the summer
  9. Reconfigure of the arrangement to keep grill away from the house
  10. 10 + 11) Resurfaced and stained some weather cedar wood
  11. 12 + 13) Where I left the project for the week, as it's going to be raining so it's all covered with a tarp.
  12. 14 + 15 ) Just a comparison of what I was trying to build and where I ended up. Excluding the kegerator and BBQ, I am probably in the hole about $1000 and this took probably 100 hours? It was a lot of learning and driving back and forth to the lumber yard, along with my dog stealing sticks.. Most of it is stained at this point with a deck stainer and I will be putting a water repellant sealant over this weekend.

It looks lop sided due to bad photo and angles, but it's basically perfectly level and the 4x4 is not straight. I am still making the cabinetry, and connecting the plumbing as there will be a bar sink. I could use advice on making counters however, everything I look at seems wildly impractical. Like pouring concrete, too heavy. Using cedar, the wood is too soft. Currently there are just temp counters with 1/2 inch exterior grade plywood.

First keg goes in next weekend.

I GOT THE GREEN LIGHT TO BUILD A BAR -- help

The image is AI generated, but is what I am trying to build.

I am going to be building a half size test model today, but I am struggling to understand the joints attaching the pillar to the roof corners and how to make them. On a small and light scale, it's fine just to use screws and metal braces, but for it to be load bearing the wood will need to be scaled up to 6 x 6's. It feels like I should be slotting the wood together in some kind of joint, would a 3 way butt joint suffice? Then there is attaching the actual roof in the corners.

Help, I am going in circles and it's halfway through saturday <3
