Gym people are the worst at actual sports
I’m an instructor in several sports, and many of my colleagues agree: our most difficult students are often people who train exclusively in the gym.
Not everyone who lifts, obviously. But the people whose entire fitness background is bodybuilding-style gym training often struggle badly when they try snowboarding, hiking, climbing, or other skill-based sports.
They tend to be:
Stiff and unable to relax their bodies
Low on endurance once they have to carry their own body weight for long periods
Poorly coordinated
Strong only in very specific, controlled movements
Lacking balance
Limited in mobility and flexibility
They may be able to lift impressive numbers, but that does not automatically translate to moving well in unpredictable environments. In many real sports, being lighter on your feet, balanced, coordinated, mobile, and able to stay calm under fatigue matters more than having a huge bench press.
Gym strength is useful, but it is not the same thing as being generally athletic or sport-ready.
Edit for clarity: This post is about adaptability It's about the time to get good/better at something new Fit people should have adapt faster than unfit people
Exclusive gymgoers call themselves fit/athletic. But from my experience they are just not
