Ex got engaged 6 months later...
I (25M) was in a 4 year relationship, the first two were in college and the second two were long distance (about 2 and half hours away). She started to grow distant in the last leg of our relationship though I didn't pick up on it right away. I told her I was saving up for a wedding ring on our 4 year anniversary. We were planning on moving in together but yet our plans never really felt concrete. In a lot of ways neither of us were stepping up to the plate and there was a lot of communication issues that were never addressed.
That being said, maybe a month after our anniversary she suddenly tells me over the phone that she needs space, then she proceeds to block me on socials and start going out and partying. I crash out during all of this, absolutely heartbroken.
I end up moving to the same city and quitting my job (I have friends and family in this city as well as a support system). The next few months were full of backstabs, betrayals, and lies from this girl I thought I knew. She eventually revealed to me that she had been in an emotional affair with this other guy and had so much guilt from it.
By the end of everything she wanted me back and tried to fix the relationship but I couldn't anymore, I had felt so disrespected and all of my trust in her had been shattered... Immediately after I end things, she goes back to this other guy, moves to the same city as him, and 6 months after our split she's been proposed to and now engaged.
I know she wasn't the one after all the stuff she did to me, but I can't help but feel hurt that everything I had been building with her over the last few years, the life I envisioned, she gave to another guy just like that.
It makes me hesitant to trust and to love someone again. This was my first real relationship. My friends tell me this is an experience almost all guys eventually go through. Dudes have to get their heart broken to get some true perspective on relationships. Maybe that's true.
