Buying gas with the Mastercard is a bad deal, you only get 5¢ off and no credit card points. If instead you use the Mastercard to buy a gift card and then use the gift card to buy gas you'll get 3x credit card points. (Assuming $4.00/Gal you'll get 12¢ towards a reward vs 5¢ off.)
The rewards points are the same regardless of which method you use.
