[Take 2] Starting a small film discussion club in Manhattan — first meet is Aug 23 at Madison Square Park

Hey all. Some of you might've seen my post about this last week before it got taken down (fair enough, I missed a posting rule). Reposting properly this time.

My friend and I are starting a low-key film club. The idea is simple: everyone watches the same movie beforehand, then we meet up and actually talk about it. No watching together, no lectures, just good conversation with people who like thinking about movies a little more than "that was fun, 7/10."

We're keeping it small on purpose, somewhere around 8 to 10 people, so it stays a real conversation and not a crowd where half the room never gets to talk. My friend and I are both in our twenties, and honestly we're hoping to meet people around the same age, just for the vibe and chemistry of it. Not a hard rule, but that's the crowd we're building for.

For the first one we just picked a movie ourselves to get the ball rolling: Whiplash. It's popular, easy to find, and pretty much everyone has feelings about it, which makes for a good opening discussion. Going forward though, the plan is for the group to have a real say in what we watch. We'll do votes so it's actually shaped by the people who show up, not just us.

Details:

When: Saturday, August 23, 2 to 3:30pm

Where: Madison Square Park (we'll sort out a specific spot closer to the date)

What: Watch Whiplash beforehand, come ready to talk about it

If you're interested, drop a comment or DM me and I'll send the signup link (I'm capping it, so first come first served). Would love to build something that actually sticks around.

Starting a movie club — trying to gauge interest

My friend and I moved to the city not too long ago and figured a good way to meet interesting people on a regular basis would be to start a little film club. Before we actually get it off the ground, we wanted to put a post out and see how much interest is out there.

The idea's pretty simple: we pick a movie, everyone watches it whenever they get a chance during the week, and then we meet up and talk about it for an hour or so. We're not really after the big popcorn stuff. More the movies that take a swing at something, or stick with you, or just leave you with a lot to say afterward. Doesn't matter if you're deep into film or just someone who likes a good conversation about one.

We're two guys in our mid-twenties, and honestly we're hoping to meet people around the same age, just because it tends to make it easier to actually become friends and keep something like this going. Not a strict rule though, so if you're a bit outside that and the idea speaks to you, say hi anyway.

If this sounds like something you'd be into, drop a comment or a quick upvote so we can get a sense of whether there's enough interest to make it happen. Happy to hear any thoughts too, like what you'd want out of a group like this, or movies you'd want to start with.

Question to my fellow pod QRs

Just wanted to get a lay of the land here from my pod QRs, particularly those that work on systematic teams.

For those in setups where there's broad exposure across the whole trading pipeline (signal generation+portfolio construction, and all the little things in between), how much do you generally work in a given week? Do you feel like your loss would be felt significantly to the team or do you feel dispensible (i.e. they could hire another person doing your job without much hassle if you left)?

Would also be helpful to know YOE whether you do macro or equities and things like whether you have formulaic payouts or get discretionary bonuses.

Question to systematic futures traders

For any of you who are in the industry and worked for at least a few years, do you ever run MFT (1-3 rebalances a day at most) systematic futures strategies on a time series basis (i.e. a strategy consisting of only one futures contract, with signals fit to that contract)? From my understanding this would be incredibly hard especially in liquid contracts and such a strategy isn't leveraging the full power of the systematic style, but interested to hear thoughts.
