Coaching as a 5-to-9/Side Hustle

Background: played high school basketball and was pretty good but fell in with the wrong crowd/habits so never took it super serious even though I loved the game a lot.

About 3 years ago, I started coaching again and it re-ignited my love for the game. I've been doing it on a volunteer basis since.

I'm deep enough into my day-job career and enjoy it enough/have enough skill and experience built that I want to keep working in that field, but I find myself increasingly thinking about coaching passively, it's become a bit of an obsession.

So while I don't want to change careers this late in my life to a profession that has very low pay for the first 5-10 years, and I don't want to switch to become a teacher so I can coach in high school, I wanted to see if anyone had experience with coaching as a "side hustle", alongside a primary career.

I don't need it to be a full second income, but some supplementary income to put money in my kids' education fund or help pay for a family vacation every year, on top of doing what I really love, would be my ideal setup.

Does anyone have experience with this and if so, how did your path work to get there? would love some general ideas to get to that point.

Brou is a meme now

been seeing people use this clip a lot, cool to see FTF getting popular enough that it's reached reaction-clip virality outside of the James Harden Incident

Chargers talk

Full disclosure this may just be Homerism on my part, or has anyone else noticed that they talk about the Chargers like some perennial basement-dwellers on the show for some reason?

I’m getting tired of hearing Parkins talk about how we did so much to rebuild the team by adding a total of 1 OL and an OC. And then wildes/nick ridicule him for believing at all in the roster

We won 11 games in b2b years! We are GOOD!!!!!! The Bengals haven’t done anything serious since you had to wear a mask to go into a McDonalds and they still get hype every season.

I get the QB has done nothing to make anyone believe we are a CONTENDER. But what do we have to do to get some respect at least as a good team??

We're finally building around the coach

Been seeing a lot of takes about how the Sixers are "only signing hoopers", "who's gonna pass the ball", "anti-analytics" this offseason etc etc

Feel like it's not being discussed that our coach & gm were actively at odds in how they wanted to play in the last 3 seasons, and now we're finally aligned which I think will be a HUGE help across 82 game seasons.

Nurse-ball is about scheming multiple scorers to their spots to keep the defense honest.

Morey-ball is about giving the ball to your best players repeatedly and allowing them to make free-flowing decisions, with complimentary players around those guys.

These are complete opposite philosophies: one is rigid in its structure but allows all players to play freely once they get to the spot (Nurse), the other is very free-flowing but requires rigid roles for most of the players (Morey)

For that reason I think our offense was at odds with itself. Morey built a team around Maxey and Embiid's skillsets, but Nurse wanted to scheme up shots for self-creators. The problem: we only really had 1 or 2 self creators available. Oubre, Barlow, Grimes, etc etc just aren't efficient enough. So you end up with 50 maxey isos a game which becomes super predictable and wears him down.

Fast forward; Bob Myers fires Morey but keeps Nurse. At first I thought this was because Myers was gonna either shadow-run the FO or hire himself as President. Now I see, he was actually keeping Nurse on because he preferred Nurse-ball to Morey-ball. He hired Gansey because he and Nurse seem aligned!

look at the roster now: Maxey. VJ. JB. Embiid. Philon. Simons. 6 players that can go get a bucket! Instead of relying on the same players to run plays for over and over, we'll basically always have 2-3 guys on the floor the defense has to pay attention to in terms of having a play schemed up for them; that can have the same effect as conceptual "spacing"; the defense can't stop paying attention to their guy because one bad closeout is a rhythm bucket.

I think you can look at specifically Nurse's Raptors teams as an amazing example of this. they didn't have especially amazing spacing, or a bunch of natural passers, or a massive-usage superstar. Nurse took over the offense 1 year before he became head coach, in 2018: from 2018-2020, he had Derozan/Kawhi, Lowry, Van Vleet, Siakam, Powell as his offensive weapons.

Only one real passer in Lowry, and yet they still were super effective and shared the ball well because of Nurse's ability to find mismatches and work the ball around to guys in order for them to all get the shots they wanted. I believe Gansey is trying to replicate this with the roster building right now.

TL;DR we are building a roster around a united scheme and philosophy for the first time in years and I'm excited to see how it goes.

Josh Jefferson is the guy

Feel like a lot of NBA fans are still in this shooting, shooting, shooting mindset. But as NYK/SAS/OKC has shown us, having an army of athletic, high IQ defensive players is now the meta in the NBA.

Josh Jefferson checks these boxes. He’s incredibly smart and has amazing connective abilities on the court - something we badly need with Max and VJ not being natural playmakers.

He’s an excellent defender as well and has the size 6’9” with a 7’0” wingspan; true 1-5 switchability and can guard 2-4. Already an NBA body so can contribute right away

Finally his projection and measurables coming into the league is very similar to one Paul George. Having him around PG early, if he does have the mindset to makie it in the NBA, could be huge for his development.

Jameer, please draft this kid 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Game doesn’t save auto or manually

Love this game but started having issues on my 3rd season where the game won’t save progress even if i manually press the save button in settings. I manually manage each game so hard to keep playing considering I’m spending like 2 hours on 15 games and then all the progress is removed

Anyone else had issues like this? Any way to solve?

Ben Simmons 2020-21 defense is the most underrated quality of any player I've ever seen

Disclaimer: I am not a Ben Simmons fan. Him and Tobias have blood on their hands for every "xyz before Embiid ECF" meme I have had to see for the last 6 years. He is a coward.

But man I was looking at some numbers and he truly was the best wing defender in the NBA for a while, and I can't believe nobody ever talks about it when they look back on him. We always mention the physical traits and the passing and speed and all that, but he was legitimately locking down the best players in the world from 2020-2021:

Luka: 17 points per 75 possesions (average over those 2 seasons: 30 p/75)
LeBron: 20 points per 75 possessions (average: 27 p/75)
Tatum: 10 points (TEN!!!) per 75 possessions (average: 26 p/75)
Giannis: 20 points per 75 possessions (average: 31 p/75)
Jimmy Butler: 13 points per 75 possessions (average: 23 p/75)
Bradley Beal: 17 points per 75 possessions (average: 30 p/75)

Some of the more skill based guards (harden, Kyrie, booker but that was personal and we know ben has no dawg) were successful against him but basically anyone who relied on physicality to score was completely nerfed against him.

Feels like it's never mentioned that when he decided to piss his career away, we basically lost a top 3 defender which in today's NBA where you can basically foul anyone at any time is just another extremely valuable skill we could've used

Who are your five favourite current MU "prospects"?

I'm a relatively new fan from North America, and a big fan of MLB; I really like how baseball teams have journos who follow and create "prospect" rankings, for all the players in their feeder systems to get fans excited about the next generation of players for their team.

With the Youth Cup final on the horizon, wanted to get a feel for who the fanbase is most excited about coming from the academy?

my list would be Gabriel 1, Vitek 2 (not a sexy pick, but having 2 strong keepers at the club felt impossible just 10 months ago), Thwaites 3, Lacey 4, Devaney 5. Curious to see what everyone else is thinking
