C1860 painting under UV light

I have this old painting (frame is new). I had the old varnish removed. Under UV light in the sky area it shows up pink. Almost like initals before painting over it. Any ideas what causes this and was it intentional by the painter?

E Thompson

I purchased this painting at auction in Italy.

Dimensions 75cm x 65cm unframed, 1.1m x 1m framed.

Depicts a lady in 'half mouring'.

Part address label verso, 'Poynter (maybe) or 'Proctor' 70 Addison Road, London W14' This was the home address of Sir Edward Poynter.

Bourlet framing company label also verso underneath the script in Italian describing Lady Butler. I gather this label dates the frame as post 1910.

My question is, is this a self portrait? Lady Butlers husband and mother both died in 1910 so I wonder if this painting is circa 1912 when she was 66 years old? Unfortunately I cannot find any clear photos of her from that period to verify.

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.
