Tacoma Community Pantry Is Officially Open!

After months of planning, I'm so excited to share that Tacoma's first community pantry is outside Urban Grace, the Downtown Church (902 Market St)!

Here's how it works; it's a free, open-to-all pantry where anyone can take what they need or leave what they can.

Right now, it's empty and waiting to be filled, so if you have unopened, sealed non-perishables (canned goods, pasta, rice, hygiene products, etc.) sitting in your pantry, this is the perfect home for them. Guidelines are posted right on the cabinet.

I'm also still looking for a few volunteers:
- Someone to help build a small rain shelter to protect the cabinet
- A local artist who'd want to paint and decorate the cabinet
- Anyone who wants to help with restocking or spreading the word

If you'd like to get involved in any way, reach out at tacomacommunitypantry@gmail.com.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this so far!

Tacoma Community Fridge

Hey friends!

Update on the community fridge project I posted about a while back. We have a confirmed location and we’re moving forward, with a small twist.

For those who missed the first post: the idea is a free, open-to-all spot where anyone can take food or leave food, no questions asked. Neighbors taking care of neighbors.

The twist is we’re starting with a community pantry rather than a fridge while we look for a location with the right setup for refrigeration.

Here’s what I need right now:
1- People who can help build the pantry structure

2- Local artists who’d want to paint and decorate it

Just to be transparent, I don’t have a budget to cover materials at this stage, so any donated tools, wood, or supplies would go a long way.

Thanks!

Social Media Vetting

I just realized that I have two Reddit accounts, I don’t know how that happened. I have only disclosed one on the DS-160 form, because I was not aware of the other one. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What should I do about it? I have nothing to hide.

I’ve been researching this idea for a while and I think Tacoma is ready for it. The idea is simple, a fridge placed outside a local business or community space where anyone can leave or take food for free.

These already exist in Seattle, NYC, Chicago, and a bunch of other cities. They’re volunteer-run and surprisingly straightforward to set up. I’ve already been in touch with the Seattle Community Fridge and Freedge (the national nonprofit that supports these) and both have been really helpful.

I’m not looking for anything formal to kick things off, just a small group of people who care and have a little time to spare. Could be 3-4 of us to start.

If this sounds like something you’d want to be part of, drop a comment or DM me. Would love to connect with people who are as excited about this as I am.
