Toyota Nonengagement Center - what now?
TL;DR: Toyota damaged my car through a recall defect that was not fixed, and now has stolen it from me and says they will repair it, but all they are doing is delayed tactics.
Toyota has an "engagement center" that I had to call to deal with the fact a recalled part created a car fire while I was driving my car. Specifically, I have a 2018 RAV4 where the battery mount is a known hazard that's caused the problem that it caused while I was driving.
Lots of kind drivers pulled over, the fire department came, I had to spray a fire extinguisher in the engine of my car to put the fire out, and it was towed to my local Toyota dealership. My Toyota dealership told me I had to contact the Toyota "[Dis]engagement Center." the engagement center asked me the same questions over and over, essentially trying to find a way that me backing out of my own driveway led to this car fire for a recalled part and known defect.
Since then, the Toyota dealership has been holding my car hostage. They won't repair it without authorization from Toyota. "Engagement Center " told me yesterday they were authorizing a
fix. I requested they notify the dealership that's working on it immediately so that I could have it this week. The damage looks like it's gonna be a few thousand dollars. The Toyota dealership tells me that's not the case and they haven't gotten any directive. Therefore, they're not ordering any parts.
I am going without a car into my second week next week, and they won't pay for a rental. I have always been a loyal to Toyota, but this experience has led me to reconsider whether or not they are an honest company that makes right what they made wrong and damaged. My dealership won't even give me my car back if I tell them I am authorizing and will pay for the repairs at this point.
