As an anime-only I was just thinking:

Given the absolute state of Subaru at the start of Season 1 (edit: as pointed out: episode 1, of course he had improved a lot already by the end of the season), even having a total memory wipe in the style of Crush would probably leave him more functional than what I suspect we're about to see?

With a total blank slate, the others could just tell him how he usually acts and he would probably just follow it. But now I feel like he has just the right selection of pre-existing memories to cause maximum trouble through stubborn bad decisions. And that without any benefits from his experience.
