GPD XD on Android 4.4.4 - cannot get the only Dreamcast core available to load, and cannot get games to run (ReiCast also not working)

EDIT: Managed to get a shot of the error - my access right now is EXTREMELY limited because I'm at work - but highlighted is the only error/fail message in the whole thing.

While I'm fairly new to RetroArch, I'm not a complete novice to the world of emulation, which is why this issue is so confusing for me.

I picked up a virtually mint condition GPD XD for £50 at the weekend and promptly threw on the most recent and stable version of RetroArch.

I installed the cores for PS1, FBNeo, Dreamcast/Flycast, SNES9x and a random NES one.

I then got the relevant BIOS files for both the PS1 and the DC, and ensured that I had all the latest files, databases, etc, and then threw a few games on for each one.

When I go to load the PS1 core, I click on "Load Core", choose the core, and then that option changes to "Unload Core" suggesting that the core is loaded. I then crack open a game and off I go.

However, when I load the DC core, nothing happens. The main menu still reads "Load Core" as if it hasn't loaded anything. I can then try loading a game which then offers me the option to load a core, but even clicking on the DC core it just won't load anything.

So I went into the core management section and checked I had all the right BIOS and other NAOMI files, and literally everything required AND optional has been installed and showing as present.

This core is the ONLY one I'm having trouble with, and no matter what I try or whatever video tutorial I watch, nothing seems to work.

I also tried ReiCast as a standalone emulator which worked flawlessly the first time I ran a game. Then when I tried to reload it again it was a slow, choppy and buggy mess, despite ZERO settings changes.

Kinda losing my mind here as I need to play Slave Zero so badly.

Thanks for any help!

Please stop saying that the game doesn't tell you anything, because it really does

I know this is going to go badly, but I don't care.

There isn't a single basic game mechanic that the game doesn't tell you about. You just either skim over the text and hold X to continue playing, or you just don't read it at all.

Stabbing waterfalls? It tells you this in a popup.

Using Nature's Snare to capture and return ranged attacks? It tells you this in the skill window.

Feeding ranch animals? It tells you this in a popup.

Swapping between characters? Popup.

Flippable wall panels? Popup.

Fishing? Popup and tooltips.

And even if you missed it, there's the Help category in the options menu.

Some puzzles won't give you any tips, but for even the most difficult puzzles there will be some glaringly obvious clue for you to work out.

Placing a power core near those cubes that control gates in abyss puzzles, for instance. First time you'll see one there'll be a power core disrupting the cube, and removing it will have an effect on something else. Same with the lasers pointing at crystals. First one you see will be shining on a crystal, and moving the laser will affect something else. In both cases, you're basically being told the solution to the puzzle, you just gotta figure out how to apply it.

The only thing that this game DOESN'T state is where loot is hidden, and what loot it is, but that'd just take any element of exploration and surprise out of the game.

Please, for the love of God, just read.

Down arrow is just there, thanks.

Remember when you first started the game, and you climbed up a hill or a tower and did your blinding flash, and the world in front of you was awash with little blue shining orbs?

Then you'd climb a REALLY tall tower and flash, and you'd see little blue orbs in every direction you looked?

Now, I'm lucky if I find a single blue orb in my travels at all.

I absolutely love this game and everything about it, but man do I get sad when I flash and there's nothing but landscape.
