Arch is Genuinely Good

Why is Arch slandered as an elitist OS for only the most hardcore PC users?

I've had nothing but good experiences with it. Same with Hyprland, it took a bit of configuration but I can't imagine myself without it now.

That's ignoring how robust [extra] is! I have nearly every program I would want just given to me in official repos.

Don't get me started with stability... it's the most stable system I've ever used.

I get that it's not for everyone, but it's genuinely a daily driver.

Crashes

FOSS is so unstable and buggy that I've never had linux crash in my life (im curious what a kernel panic screen looks like tbh)

First few days back into Windows, so stable, bsod nearly immediately into joining a game. Just loving Windows so much over linux totally! I love crashes, I mean who doesn't want a total mess of a system

Edit: Update, it just crashed again. I don't care for windows whatsoever again. I hate it.

Arch Linux

Alright so I don't know if I'm necessarily a beginner to Linux but I have only used it for about a few months consistently.

I immediately jumped from Windows 11 to Arch Linux, ignoring advice from those telling me to use Mint.

I've since tried out Fedora Workstation and enjoyed GNOME enough to put it on my Arch installation.

I've found Arch really good, but people say other distros are great. Is it worth it to try out Mint, Debian, Ubuntu, etc.? Or would I risk entering a distrohopping trap?

Genuinely hate Windows

I have used linux for months and now am making a separate install for windows on the side and I just feel absolutely out of place

Luckily windows has good customization available, but it's taking a while to rice...

Watch out for sealioning!

Sealioning is a common tactic Loonixtards use. It is extremely difficult to argue with them because no piece of evidence is good enough for them. They just want more and more.

It's deliberate to try to tire you out until you give up and forget your original argument.

My own experiences should matter very much here but apparently it's not enough to cite sources and explain my own experiences.

Don't let them win! Block and report! Hopefully more subs take action and block them.

Linux can't game lmao

Genuinely why are yall larping

Windows is still the only option if you don't want to have to go "Oh sorry my computer cant play ___" to tons of people

And to those who hate kernel level anticheat, you seem to lack knowledge of why it is what it is. Seems like yall are just wanting to cheat?

Don't act like Linux is perfect. It isn't. It really isn't. Such larp

Windows Isn't Terrible

To all the people who love deep ricing, why not just use customization scripts? I've been recently tinkering in VMs, and Windows really seems solid for that. You can make Windows match your workflow amazingly, and the best part is that friction nearly always leads to an impressive result.

Also, default Windows 11 isn't bad. The UI looks nice, and we take the settings & control panel apps for granted. Over on GNOME, just to change the cursor you use, you need to install a tweaks app. Windows has tons of customization you can do without installing anything extra.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but Windows isn't really THAT much of a shitshow like people act.

Windows CAN be what Linux users want. But when they claim that Windows users are too lazy to face friction, they conveniently forget that they can't handle actual friction of ricing because they only download others' dotfiles and larp as a developer.

What a REAL OS Is

Edit: I do not consider Python or Scratch to be able to single handedly run an OS. This is not my point. My point is that they are just as valid as bare metal OSes and that they are still OS projects. However for the redstone CPU ones, that's just flat out an OS. Same with things running in QEMU.

A Python "OS" may not technically be an OS. Nor a Scratch project, right?

Well what about when you get to lower levels? People ran Linux in Scratch. People have made OSes for Redstone CPUs in Minecraft. People have made genuinely complex Python projects that were made to look like an OS that were dismissed since they weren't a "real" OS.

Some people say that if it runs in a VM or on bare metal, it's probably an OS or at least a piece of an OS. What do you define as bare metal? Redstone CPU?

The fact that people can put in so much effort and be dismissed totally because it's not real enough is just absurd. I made my own Python "OS" and it has plenty. I don't necessarily consider it an OS, but I consider it an OS project. If someone simply told me that it wasn't a "real" OS, that would be dismissing everything I was trying to show.

Same thing with the OS I wrote in C and Assembly that actually runs in QEMU. However because I don't own the hardware needed to test it (and because I don't feel safe executing ring 0 code that I wrote on my own machine) I cannot call it true bare metal in a sense. QEMU simplifies a lot. That's true. That doesn't mean it's not an OS.

I made it out of enjoyment because I wanted to have fun. It's real. Maybe it doesn't meet some redditor's standard, but damn, your project is real too. QEMU or bare metal, interpreted language or not.

Your project is real, and operating system isn't defined by one person.

NVIDIA Unplayable Performance - Geometry Dash (Hyprland)

Hey! I'm not sure if anyone else has this issue, but Hyprland seems to be practically unusable for Geometry Dash at the moment on NVIDIA GPUs. Everything else seems to work fine, but I get so many stutters in GD. Switching to iGPU fixes this issue, but then introduces the issue that the iGPU simply isn't strong enough to handle a lot of my tasks.

Why hate the tool?

For some reason, so many people hate AI in general because of things that have been done with AI.

My question is do you hate radios? They were a tool to control people and to promote fascism.

I believe that AI can be good, but it's a tool that can be for convenience, genuine important progress, and sadly for bad.

I don't think the way it is now is sustainable or realistic for the future, but I think it's tech that we shouldn't stereotype.

Hurts nobody, no?

I'm partially anti. I'm partially pro. I think that's where most logical people stand, but some Antis are very clearly misinformed or just ignorant.

I've gone around asking what people think about local language models through stuff like llama.cpp, and a surprisingly high amount of people said that it was unethical, bad for the environment, or just overall bad for my health.

I'll be responding to that.

  1. Bad for the environment

I got laughed at when explaining that local AI had no more of an environmental impact than playing videogames. They asked where I got my numbers from. I got it from my System Monitor app. On my computer. It shows the resource load.

In fact, some have said that I still waste water or that I can't know if I'm not wasting water by switching to local. Not sure how that works, but my computer uses a standard consumer cooling system. Just shows their lack of understanding of what it actually is.

  1. Unethical

This is a more fair argument; however, it falls apart depending on what they mean. Many have told me that I'm still benefitting from scraped data, and to that, I can't deny it. I am definitely, but I don't see the issue in that. I'm not using it for a professional project. I'm not using it to harass people. I'm simply using it as a tool.

  1. Bad for my health

"You're not putting in full effort! You would've had to do \_\_\_ before and now you're lazy! This is a bad habit..."

I never would've been doing that before! I would've done CTRL + C and CTRL + V. If I wanted to write code, I would learn! (and I have been! for years! I enjoy it!) If I wanted a small utility that helps me in my day to day life and didn't primarily care how I got it? Sure! I'll AI generate it!

And for the social skills issues with chatbots, I can already assure you that my social life is non-existent. I mean... it's Reddit.... do any of us actually have a life?

What IDE

What IDE do you guys recommend for this? I'll probably be primarily writing Assembly, C, and Rust, but C and Rust mostly.

Is Neovim sufficient or should I use something else like vs code

Amazing Updates from Mojang Lately

Can we just acknowledge how good the game is right now?

Every single game drop has been excellent, and they add features to the game that simply improve the game. It makes previous game versions feel worse to play, and that really says something.

Especially with the new fall drop, I just can't believe they're adding an autumn themed biome to the game. It's genuinely beautiful. And the little camps all over? Man we really do need more surface structures. It's amazing that we get this.

I can't pretend like Mojang is trash or putting out garbage. I can't pretend like an end update is the only path to an improved game. I just can't act like this isn't a rapidly improving game, and it was already amazing.

A Challenge for Both Sides

If you're pro Linux, list three things you dislike about Linux or things you like about Windows. (there should be at least one of each, totalling 3 things)

If you're anti Linux, list three things you dislike about Windows and things you like about Linux. (there should be at least one of each, totalling 3 things)

I'll start. I like Linux, but

  1. There are so many different decentralized app formats. AppImage tries to unify it all, but it really just feels lazy and not clean in the slightest. Every distro has its own package manager, there's Flatpaks, Snaps, on Arch there's an AUR, and it's just overall so confusing for new users and even experienced users.

  1. I know it's meant to be the philosophy on Linux, but everything is a folder and it's so confusing! On Windows, \\.\ is the root for devices, and volumes are given simple letters! Windows is so much cleaner here. It's separation of different components.

  1. Windows is just overall great for consistent keybinds. On Linux, you'll see all kinds of different keybinds, and yes it's nice you can change them, but on Windows it's always consistent. You always know what to expect.

To what extent do you dislike Linux?

I know most of the Anti Linuxers here simply dislike the community of Linux zealots and maybe don't find Linux suitable for their own uses.

But are there any people here who genuinely believe that there is no reason for Linux to be used? And I want to disqualify server hosting immediately. Linux is quite often the standard for hosting servers.

However I'm talking about everyday use. Are there any people here who genuinely think that Windows can offer everything Linux can, plus more?

With all this being asked, I do already know that most anti Linuxers here are quite logical with most of their reasons, often simply boiling down to just "It doesn't work for me" which is totally valid! Why stop using something that already works? (Windows)

Edit: I also respectfully ask for an answer to "Why", since a lot of people tend to answer without an explanation.

Language Choice for Project

Working on making an x86 operating system (custom disk layout so just 512 byte boot sector) and I wasn't sure what language is best for each thing at first, but at this point my current stance is:

Assembly for low level code that requires Assembly instructions

C for lower level components that commonly require memory access or I/O

Rust for everything else

Also I was thinking about using a custom language I make as a bytecode compiled language to make userspace programs so that it could be more integrated to the system.

Thoughts?
