How to gain confidence?

How do you gain confidence as a photographer, especially when directing people?

I’ve always been more socially anxious and not very confrontational, so getting used to directing people during shoots has honestly been one of the hardest parts for me. My social anxiety has gotten tremendously better than it used to be, and I can still be outgoing, but I’m just getting started in professional photography even though I’ve been doing photography for years.

I’ve definitely gotten better with each session, but sometimes my mind still goes blank even when I prepare beforehand and I suddenly don’t know what to say or do. I think part of it is that my style is naturally more documentary and observational, so being more vocal and intentionally directing people doesn’t come as naturally to me yet. I also think part of it could be that I’m not fully comfortable or confident with myself right now either, which probably carries over into how I approach shoots.

It’s also hard to give myself credit for how far I’ve already come. For photographers who struggled with confidence or social anxiety at first, what actually helped you get more comfortable during shoots and directing people?

Nikon Z6iii Lenses

Just picked up a Nikon Z6III over a month ago and I’m trying to figure out the best direction to go with lenses long term. I also shoot film on a Nikon N80, so over the years I’ve collected a decent amount of older Nikon AF-D glass. From what I understand, most of the AF-D lenses won’t autofocus on the Z6III with the FTZ adapter, so I’ll probably end up selling a lot of them off eventually. I do still have some newer AF-S lenses that work fine adapted. I’d love to fully switch over to native Z glass eventually because the autofocus and overall shooting experience seem way better, but the prices add up fast.
I shoot a little bit of everything:
-skateboarding
-concerts
-events
-portraits
-nature/travel
documentary/everyday stuff

Right now I’m specifically looking for a zoom lens.

Current lenses:
Nikon 35mm f/1.8 (borrowing from a friend and I prefer 28mm)
Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G
Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8G
Nikon AF-S 105mm f/2.8G VR Macro (borrowing from a friend but honestly one of my favorite lenses and I personally don’t feel like I need a 1.4 lens)
Nikon Z 28mm f/2.8

I’ve been looking at:
AF-S 24-120mm f/4G
Z 24-200mm
Z 28-75mm f/2.8

For those of you who switched from DSLR Nikon systems to Z:
Did you keep adapting F-mount lenses or eventually move fully to Z?
Do you use third party lenses? What do you recommend?
Which zoom lens felt the most versatile for mixed shooting?
Is the 24-200 f4 good enough for what I need or will I regret not getting constant f/2.8?
Is adapting good AF-S lenses still worth it in 2026 or does native Z glass really feel that much better? Does it affect the colors?

Would love to hear real-world experiences/regrets before I sink more money into lenses. I am also a professional photographer and may start doing weddings in case this is helpful info too!
