Anything else I should consider bringing?

At home developing

I’m looking to start developing film at home, is this a good starter setup or should I do something else? Thank you!

Photos from a mini-vacation to Montreal

I live in Ottawa; I love Montreal but as time and age grind away I find I have less free time and less opportunity to visit your lovely city. Last month I finally had a chance to spend a few days in town with my wife, and I shot some black and white film while I was there (for the first time in many years). Particularly special for me; visiting Habitat 67 has been a dream of mine for many years now and I was really excited to learn that they had opened it up to guided tours. What an amazing spot!

You folks have such a beautiful and vibrant city, I'm always a bit sad when it's time to return home. I can't wait for my next visit!

Shots from a few days in Montreal [Nikon F2, various lenses, Tri-X]

Montreal, June 2026

Other than some rolls six years ago during the pandemic, it's been almost 20 years since I shot B&W with any seriousness. I got the bug recently and I really enjoyed shooting these when I was out of town for a few days last month. It won't be the last time!

Edit: I made a mistake with the image captions; the 8th photo is in fact with the 50mm F1.8 AI-S and polarizer, not the 28.

Tulips - [Nikon F5 / AF DC-Nikkor 135mm F2.0 / Ektachrome E100]

Dow's Lake, Nepean, May 2026

This is a beautiful lens that I don't get to use very often, and even less so for its intended purpose of portraiture. It is however quite capable of delivering outstanding results for any other photography you could want to do with it.

I am also playing around with slight underexposure of Ektachrome to bring out some more saturation and contrast. Not much tweaking to the scans needed to bring them close to the original slides and they yield great, rich colours that almost remind me of Velvia 50 in their depth. Quite happy with the results and something I will try to expand on a bit in a future session.

I had a shot left on the roll and I wanted to finish it up so I could send it out. SB-80DX was handheld in front of my face just outside the frame attached to the Bronica with a long sync cord. I took a flash meter reading of my face to determine what output to use at F22 in order to make sure the plane of focus was going to be wide enough to have my face acceptably sharp. Normally I use my big Metz with the Bronica but I don’t have a sync cable long enough to do something like this with it (proprietary connector).

There was no background used (I’m in my basement); I was in sort of a hallway so there was enough space behind me that everything would just end up pitch black. I wore my best film photography beanie just for you guys ❤️ (made by my wife!)

Provia really has great skintones. I wish I had more opportunities to shoot portraits these days.

Happy Friday and happy shooting 😊

Anyway… hey everyone!
