Why is it so hard for people in Emergency Room waiting rooms to wear a mask when they’re actively coughing?
Yesterday I was at a downtown hospital emergency room waiting area, and something really stuck with me.
There were several people coughing in the waiting room. Only a few people were wearing masks.
One person in particular was coughing nonstop. At one point, she coughed so violently that visible mucus came out and landed near someone sitting in front of her. That’s when a serious argument started about why she wasn’t wearing a mask.
And it made me wonder:
Why does wearing a mask in this exact situation feel like such a difficult thing for some people?
An ER waiting room is not a normal public space. You’re surrounded by people who are sick, vulnerable, elderly, immunocompromised, or waiting for urgent care. It’s basically the highest-risk indoor environment you can be in.
I was thinking, what about people that go to libraries, coffee shops, restaurants, or other public places for hours and cough, sneeze non-stop etc.
From a public health standpoint, masks aren’t about fear or politics. They’re about source control, reducing the spread of respiratory droplets when someone coughs or sneezes.
And the evidence for that is actually very consistent:
- Masks reduce the spread of respiratory droplets at the source
- Surgical masks significantly reduce how far particles travel when you cough
- When used properly, masks lower transmission of respiratory infections in healthcare and community settings
For example:
- For example, researchers who looked at many studies together found that people who wear masks tend to catch fewer respiratory infections overall.
- Other reviews of the evidence show the same pattern: masks help reduce the spread of illness when they’re worn properly and consistently.
- And in controlled lab studies, masks clearly reduce how many germs and droplets are released when someone breathes, talks, or coughs, which lowers the chance of spreading infection to others.

So this isn’t really a “debate” in the moment. If you’re actively coughing in a crowded ER waiting room, wearing a mask is one of the simplest ways to reduce risk for everyone around you.
What surprises me is how this basic act, protecting the person sitting 2 feet away from you, has somehow become optional.
Genuinely curious how others see this.

be careful in hochelaga
I just saw a stranger (a man) on my back balcony peering into my window. I told him to go away and he asked if he could come in and use my washroom and that he was waiting for his friend. Wouldn’t take no for an answer until I basically yelled at him to leave. He had a polaroid camera with him so I think I know why he was there.
Lived alone here for 2 years and never felt unsafe — even walked my dog late at night with no problems. Please be careful out there.

I don't care if your dog is nice
people of montreal:
the sun is out and I've noticed more and more people out with their dogs.
I cannot count how many times in the past two weeks I've been out with my dog and we've been jumpscared by another dog from behind with their owner just letting them do what they want. just because your dog is seemingly inoffensive DOES NOT mean my dog is. the result is my reactive dog tries to lunge at the stranger's dog, barking her head off, and I have to be the one to restrain her. I've broken a nail, got my wrist messed up and gotten pissed more than I can count. it's a highly stressful event that we both would like to avoid.
please be considerate of reactive dogs and don't automatically think my dog wants to be approached by yours, especially if they're on the bigger side. dogs are always going to be drawn to each other, and it's our responsibility to constrain our pets, until their owner consents to the interaction or is at the very least aware of what is happening.
I appreciate any time another dog and their owner swaps sidewalks.
and before I get comments about training her, she was a rescue and I don't have the funds to train her, and positive reinforcement can only go so far. she's also up there in age, so for now, she'll be wearing a warning tag to not approach.
edited to add:
this also pertains to owners who let their dog off-leash. don't be a dick and leash your dog. no one wants to be approached by a stranger's animal, with or without their own dog, and no amount of saying "my dog is nice" changes that.

Drivers: PLEASE check for cyclists. It could save a life.
I am a very cautious cyclist who is still shaken up from my 15 min commute to work.
First, at a red light, someone swung their door open hitting directly into me. Shortly after, a second car changed lanes to get around someone turning left and I had to slam on my brakes. If I hadn’t in time, I would have been crushed as they were going full speed. Mind you, I was in the bike lane both times.
I understand some cyclists are irresponsible. That is its own discussion. However, I genuinely beg you to also check for the “bad cyclists” since what would be mildly inconvenient for you could be life threatening to them.
The close calls I typically experience are people opening their doors without checking, or changing lanes without signalling or checking blind spots. It’s an easy thing to forget, but think of us when you are driving this spring.
