I’m currently pursuing the IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications / Data Science and Programming. I’m trying to understand my M.Tech options through GATE.

My main question is not only about CS/Data Science, but whether I can move into other engineering branches through GATE.

For example, if I write a GATE paper in a branch like AE/ME/EE/CE/XE/DA/CS, does that make me eligible for M.Tech admission in that branch? Or do institutes also check whether my undergraduate qualifying degree discipline matches the M.Tech branch?

So I want to understand the practical reality for someone from the IITM BS Data Science program.

My questions:

1. Which M.Tech branches is an IIT Madras BS Data Science graduate generally eligible for?
2. Are we mostly limited to CS/AI/Data Science-related M.Tech programs?
3. Can we apply for branches like Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Energy, Robotics, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Computational Science, etc. if we write the relevant GATE paper?
4. Does a valid GATE score in a branch override the undergraduate degree requirement, or are both checked separately?
5. Are there any examples of IITM BS Data Science / BSc Programming and Data Science students getting into M.Tech programs outside CS/Data Science?

Any insights from IITM BS students/alumni, GATE aspirants, or people who have gone through M.Tech admissions in IITs/NITs/IISc/IIITs would be really helpful.
