Battle of the 2025 Champions: It’s once again time for the battle of the 2025 MLS Supporters’ Shield Champions vs the 2025 MLS Champions. This is the second time these teams are facing off this season, and as most of you probably remember, the first game was a defensive masterclass that ultimately ended in a 4-6 loss for the Union. That loss ended up being the last act of Bradley Carnell’s story with the Union as we entered the World Cup break. I would expect tonight to be another high scoring affair as these teams do have a habit of leaking goals with the Union allowing 35, and Miami allowing 36. And if history repeats itself, it's going to be an uphill battle for the Union as they are still winless in 6 games during the Inter Messi era.
Union Preview (19 Points 13th in the East): Well I’ll be damned, the Union are tied with Houston as the hottest team in MLS as they ride a 4 game win streak that includes not one, but two come from behind deficits of being down 2-0 to then win 3-2. This is the first 4 game win streak the Union have had in MLS since Matchdays 13 thru 16 in 2023 and someone pinch me, because Damiani bagged his first brace in MLS play vs NYCFC over the weekend. But all good things must come to an end as Iloski’s 6 game scoring streak was finally broken. Interestingly enough, Iloski has now taken the 2nd most shots in the league with 74, trailing only Messi who has taken 100 on the season. With Lukic out on yellow card accumulation, I expect Bueno to be sliding into CDM at midfield tonight, and maybe we’ll get to see Quinn start, considering we will need extra fire power on offense. Raquinho is not expected to be in attendance due to a sprained ankle after tripping on the pitcher’s mound at Yankee Stadium.
Miami Preview (38 Points 2nd in East): Well here we go again, Inter Messi and the plastics are back in town so tonight should be a fun one. Miami are entering tonight leading the league with 46 goals, but they are currently on a 3 game losing streak, 2 of which were during Leagues Cup, and then a 4-1 beatdown at Nashville over the weekend. This offensive juggernaut is terrifying as Messi has 12 goals and 8 assists, Suarez follows with 10 goals and 6 assists, and overall this whole team can score as they have 12 total goalscorers. As mentioned above though, that comes at the expense of the defense. This team is averaging 1.89 allowed per game and are actually going through a goalkeeper battle right now. Former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, Dayne St. Clair started the season as the obvious pick in goal, but after averaging 2 goals per game allowed, and backup, Rocco Rios Novos averaging 3 per game, it's unclear who will get the nod going forward. Miami have been playing mainly out of the 4-4-2 post the World Cup break, but with De Paul out on suspension, we’ll see who slides into midfield for him.

Leagues Cup is Over!: Now that the pesky Leagues Cup group stage is over, we can return our full attention to making that playoff run a reality. For tonight, the Union are taking a quick road trip to take on rivals NYCFC in a very congested August schedule. This is the 29th meeting of clubs where NYCFC holds a slight advantage with a 14W/12L/2/D record. And as you can see with that overall record, these teams do not draw often, with a current streak of 12 games without one. The Union hold a slight lead with 40 goals for and 39 against all-time, but NYCFC did prevail in our meeting on Matchday 2 with a 2-1 victory. Both teams had a similar Leagues Cup experience having lost to Cruz Azul early on, and playing a rotated squad for Game 3 on Thursday. So both teams should be facing the same level of fatigue from the tournament.
UNION Preview (16 Points 14th in the East): It looks like Richter’s gamble paid off on Thursday night by rotating the squad, as the Union would have been eliminated regardless of their result by various other teams. Back in regular season play, Iloski has broken into double digits with 10 goals on the season and is now the Union’s record holder with 6 straight games with a goal scored. With that tally, he’s only 3 goals off the Golden Boot lead. Cavan meanwhile leads the team with 4 assists (going off MLS assists, so that mark probably includes secondary assists as well). As you all know, we’ve won 3 of 3 since the World Cup break and are looking to continue that good form on the road as we have only 1 road win on the season so far. Raquinho has already informed the team he will not be playing on a baseball field in fear of an ACL tear.
NYCFC Preview (26 Points 7th in East): Going to be honest, with an injury list like the one NYCFC is coming in with tonight, there should be no excuses for not getting at least a point on the road for the Union. Not to mention that MLS’s Golden Boot leader Nico Fernandez (13G) is out on yellow card accumulation. Like the Union, NYCFC have had a stellar post-World Cup run with 2 wins and a draw in their 3 games. We’ll see some familiar faces with Matt Freese who has 3 Clean Sheets on the season, and Andres Perea who has a goal and 2 assists on the season. Their solid defense has only conceded 24 times this season, which is 7th best in the league and has them at the 7th best GD in the league at +7. Expect them to play out of a 4-3-3 as they did in our first meeting, but they also like to go to the 4-1-4-1. And for those asking, yes they are finally getting an actual stadium, which should be ready for the schedule change in July next year.

ANYONE ACTUALLY GOING?: This game means nothing for either team other than a cash bonus, so I say start anyone who isn’t starting on Sunday. Anyone wanna take the under/over of 1000 fans in attendance for tonight?
UNION Preview (16 Points 13th in MLS East): We had a great showing vs Necaxa, so hopefully even with a rotated team we can keep the good vibes rolling into the regular season. Richter heavily implied we would be rotating tonight and that Stas will be seeing first team action after his MLS NEXT Pro Player of the Matchday performance this week. Unfortunately, Raquinho damaged his eyes trying to watch yesterday’s eclipse and will need to sit out tonight.
Santos Laguna (0 Points 17th in Liga MX): Santos Laguna comes to Chester tonight as one of the weakest teams from both MLS & LigaMX. Through 5 games in regular season play and Leagues Cup they have lost all 5 games, and have been outscored 12-3 in that time. Founded in 1983, Santos Laguna has a few titles to their name, but the most recent came in 2018 as the Clausura Champions. In the last 4 years of Leagues Cup, they are still yet to win a game, with a 0W/7L/3D record. Playing out of the 4-2-3-1 over the past few games, I don’t see this team breaking that trend, even with the Union fielding a rotated squad.
Tournament Structure:
- 18 MLS clubs (2025 Playoff Teams) vs 18 Liga MX clubs (Entire League)
- First stage is a group stage where each team plays three games vs the opposing league
- Win = 3 points, Tie + Win in PK’s = 2 points, Tie + Loss in PK’s = 1 point
- No Extra Time, straight to PK’s
- After the three games, the top 4 teams from each league will advance to single elimination knockout rounds. There is a separate points table for each league.
- If tied on points after 3 games, the tiebreakers will be in the following order; Goal Difference, Wins, Goals Scored, Goals Against, Fair Play, Random Draw
- 3 yellows leads to a game suspension, reset entering the knockout rounds

WWWWWAAAAAKKKKEEEEE UUUUPPPP!!! DOES TODAY’S GAME MEAN ANYTHING!?!? IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE IT BUT WE PLAY ANYWAY!!! ON THE BRIGHT SIDE WE’LL GET TO SEE THE RETURN OF KING JULIAN!!! IIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTSSSSSSS GGGGAAAAMMMMMEEEEDDDAAAAYYYY!!!!
A MEANINGLESS GAME?: Considering both of these teams lost in the first game, it's more than likely that neither will advance now. Necaxa might have a slim chance, but it would be highly improbable. This will be the first time the clubs have ever met, so we’ll see how they fare against one another, but I would expect to see rotation on both sides (especially for the Union). This will also be Julian Carranza’s first return to the Union after his departure to Feyenoord in the summer of 2024. He went on to score 5 goals in 20 appearances with the club. In Sept of 2025, he was loaned to Leicester City for the remainder of the year where he had no goals in 9 appearances with the club. He then signed a five year deal with Necaxa at the beginning of this year. He already has a respectable 6 goals and 1 assist after only 9 appearances with the club. He also got a red in his last domestic game for the new mouth covering rule.
UNION Preview (16 Points 13th in MLS East): Well we have a 99% chance to be knocked out of the tournament already, so I say rotate the team and let the kids get some reps in. Not much more to add. Raquinho is also not expected to play due to load management.
Necaxa Preview (6 Points 8th in Liga MX): Technically Necaxa isn’t eliminated yet, but they’re likely going to need two wins a large positive GD in their next two games if they want to sneak into the knockout rounds. After falling to Chicago in Game 1 with a score of 2-0, and the third game being against NYCFC, I don’t really see that happening. This club does have a history of success, as they claimed the 1999 CONCACAF CHAMPIONS CUP, but they have not been able to find a breakthrough with a 2W/7L/1D record in the past four years of Leagues Cup. Some of you may be familiar with the club as they have a plethora of celebrity owners, including Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds who bought a minority stake in the club in 2024. Along with Eva Longoria, they then began producing the show “Necaxa” in the style of “Welcome to Wrexham”. (Personally I’ve never seen the show so let me know if it's worth the watch). On the field they’ve been rolling out a different line-up each game this season, but they do like to play with 3 CB’s. They are yet to put together a Clean Sheet in the regular season or Leagues Cup.

philadelphiaunion.comWWWWWAAAAAKKKKEEEEE UUUUPPPP!!! IT’S TIME AGAIN FOR EVERYONE’S FAVORITE CASH GRAB TOURNAMENT!!! CAN THE UNION CONTINUE THEIR HOT STREAK OR WILL THEY PUNT THE TOURNAMENT TO FOCUS ON THE REGULAR SEASON?!?! FIND OUT TONIGHT BECAUSE IIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTSSSSSSS GGGGAAAAMMMMMEEEEDDDAAAAYYYY!!!!
WHAT IS LEAGUES CUP?: Short answer…it’s a money grab for the league owners. Long answer…it’s a multi-league tournament between MLS and Liga MX with a trophy, three CONCACAF CHAMPIONS CUP berths, and bragging rights on the line…and it's a money grab for the league owners. There’s been multiple forms of Leagues Cup over the years, but this is the 4th consecutive year of this iteration. The Union and Cruz Azul have only faced off against one another once in their club history’s. That was during the 2024 group stage of this tournament which ended 1-1, followed by Cruz Azul winning in PK’s. Historically, MLS has dominated Leagues Cup, as in the past 3 years, only one team, CF Monterrey, has even made it to the semi-finals. On the flip side, the Union have made it to the semi-finals in both of the years they participated. The tournament structure is a bit convoluted, so see below for a breakdown, but know that the top 4 teams from MLS and the top 4 teams from Liga MX will advance to the knockout stages. Last year, the tiebreaker was GD on 7 points for MLS, and 6 points for LigaMX. In other words, teams will likely need at least two wins in regulation time to advance.
UNION Preview (16 Points 13th in MLS East): Of course the Union finally have some momentum for the first time this season and it then gets interrupted by this tournament. It's going to be fascinating to see how the team approaches tonight as this likely would be the team’s best chance of clinching a CCC spot, but it might also be a good idea to rotate in some of the 2nd team to get some reps in and focus on the regular season. I feel like we’ll get at least one Pickle Rick appearance in this tournament. Historically the Union have fared well in Leagues Cup as they have reached the Semifinals in both of their appearances for a 3rd place finish in 2023, and 4th place in 2024. With our Supporters' Shield winning season in 2025, the Union are technically the 2nd highest ranked MLS team entering the tournament behind Miami, and would host any other MLS team (apart from Miami) if they were to meet in the knockout rounds. Our opponents for the group stage will be Cruz Azul, Necaxa, and Santos Laguna. Don’t expect to see Raquinho tonight though, as he is rumored to be suffering from a case of cyanophobia.
Cruz Azul Preview (6 Points 6th in Liga MX): The Union’s first opponent in the group stage will be their toughest on paper as Cruz Azul will be entering tonight as the favorites. One of the best clubs in LigaMX history, Cruz Azul has numerous trophies, including 7 CCL/CCC titles, the most recent coming in 2025 and earning themselves a spot in the 2029 World Cup. This historic club will be celebrating their 100th season next year and will be looking to add another trophy to the collection, but Cruz Azul has not done well in the past 3 Leagues Cup’s, having been eliminated in the Ro32, Ro16, and group stage. In their three games of league play they have changed up formation each time and have scored 7 goals through 6 different goalscorers. There is room to exploit their defense, as they’ve conceded 6 times in those three games. Aside from the union, their next two opponents will be NYCFC and Chicago, so even with a strong team, this is a tough group of teams to be paired up with. And disclaimer for anyone who has not seen Cruz Azul play before, they have a large fanbase, so expect a large turnout of away fans in the stadium tonight.

youtu.beWWWWWAAAAAKKKKEEEEE UUUUPPPP!!! THE UNION ARE FINALLY ON A WIN STREAK AS WE HAVE THE HONOR OF HOSTING THE BATTLE OF THE WOODEN SPOON TONIGHT!!! ATLANTA UNITED ARE IN TOWN SO WE CAN TRULY DETERMINE THE BIGGEST LOSER OF MLS!!! IIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTSSSSSSS GGGGAAAAMMMMMEEEEDDDAAAAYYYY!!!!
Battle of the Wooden Spoon: For what feels like the 5th time this season, the Union are in a Wooden Spoon deciding race and for today it's against a floundering Atlanta United. This is the 2nd time the clubs are facing off this season, as Atlanta prevailed 3-1 back on Matchday 4. This will be the 21st meeting of clubs all-time and the Union hold a slight advantage with 7W/6L/7D and 29 goals to 28 in those games. Chester has historically been a nightmare for Atlanta to come play at, as in their 9 trips here, their only win came all the way back in 2018. Since the World Cup break these teams have been going in opposite directions, but both will do whatever they can to avoid that dreaded spoon. And with tonight being the last game before Leagues Cup kicks off, August will be a very congested schedule.
UNION Preview (13 Points 14th in the East): Hot damn, we’re on our first win streak of the season! It only took us 17 games but we’ve finally done it with a chance to go for three tonight! Iloski is one of the hottest players in the league right now with 7 goals in our last 5 games. With that mark, Iloski is now tied with Gazdag (2022) for the longest consecutive scoring streak in Union history and has a chance to be the sole leader with a goal tonight. And don’t look now, but he’s only 4 off the Golden Boot race now as well. On the defensive side, Wagner’s return has energized the boys and the team put together their first clean sheet since Matchday 11 and Blake’s 106th overall with the club. On the flip side, Makhanya is officially on his way out to Rangers, and Ndinga is set to be loaned out to Zulte Waregem as the Union try to rebuild its core. If results go the Union’s way tonight, we could rise one spot to 13th in the East as we enter the Leagues Cup break. Raquinho is not expected to make an appearance tonight as he is slated be at SummerSlam in a Dumpster Match vs Oscar the Grouch.
ATL Preview (12 Points Last in MLS): Well well well, look how the turns have tabled, the Union are taking on a Wooden Spoon leading Atlanta United in the battle of MLS’s worst. Atlanta are in complete disarray right now as they are winless in 7 straight, and have only managed to cobble together 1 road win in their 2026 campaign. They have some familiar faces on the roster with Segio Santos & Fafa Picault, but neither have been able to help improve the worst offense in MLS that’s managed to score only 17 times. Of those 17 goals, Alexey Miranchuk leads with 5G & 3A, followed by Miguel “The Mouth Coverer” Almiron 2G & 3A. And what may be a blessing for Atlanta at this point, DP and former MLS transfer record breaking, Emmanuel Latte Lath appears to be on his way out as the team tries to find any good news. Playing primarily out of the 4-1-4-1, this defense leaks goals and has only been able to put together one Clean Sheet once, back on Matchday 5, in a 0-0 draw vs DC.
