A brief of Rugby in SRI LANKA!

Hey Mates, I just figured out that the sporting world do not recognize how much Sri Lankans love Rugby Union.... we are only recognized by the outer world for cricket but kid you not, Rugby is the 2nd most commercially viable sport in our beautiful island and we've been playing the beautiful game of Rugby Union for over 140 years. (We like to call it Rugger)

We have a rock solid Schools Structure spanning over 3 divisions with over 60 schools (give or take) participate in every year. Also, some top tier Rugby Playing Schools in Sri Lanka have budgets of atleast 850,000 USD per season!!!!! Schools matches attract atleast 4000-5000 heads per game in average and some traditional encounters or league defining encounters would easily attract a minimum of 10,000 people. Our Club Structure is a work in progress but still the talent in it is immense. We hover around 3rd and 4th in Asian Rankings right behind Korea, Hong Kong and obviously Japan but......... we will get to the top sooner rather than later. The pathway for Sri Lanka to play in a world cup is not far away!!!

Attached is a snippet from a game played few weeks ago for the Club League decider played between Kandy SC (Based in Kandy and the most successful club in history with the most passionate fans) against CR and FC (The club with the most history, richer and the most posh club in the country). This will demonstrate how passionate Sri Lankans are for Rugby!!

I would like to invite you all to follow our journey as we try to make it to the world cup. You can always follow our Rugby Season (club + schools) on Youtube as it is televised right on it without subscriptions.

By the way, to you British people...... Few things I'm grateful for your ancestors colonizing us is introducing Cricket, Rugby and Tea!!! Love you for that!
