The fall run begins - First load of calves hauled off pasture shipped to market

It’s always bittersweet but so glad to be getting them in early this year, spent the last two days searching for and sorting them out.

praying I get a good price on them. 🙏

Structuring runs outside of training blocks

Since my original post was removed for lack of context, excuse me while I regurgitate context.

I started running July 2024 after having my kid and feeling like I’d lost myself, my mind, my body, everything. Couldn’t run to the stop sign at the end of my street without stopping, I was pushing a stroller down a dirt road, but admittedly still demoralizing.

Idk why I kept with it, but I did. Then for Christmas asked for a treadmill and a garmin. I got both.

Within weeks I decided I wanted to try to run a marathon and within two months of that I decided to set a goal instead of just finishing, I wanted to do sub 3:25 and BQ.

Lined up, raced my heart out, got my bq and all I could say was Oh my god I’m so glad that that’s over. But immediately signed up for another race scheduled for a month later.

Ended up racing four min slower, but placing so was super pumped to do more running and try again next year kind of thing. Especially so because I had walked a small bit during my marathon efforts, so figured there was easy time left on the course to claim.

Did Boston this year, plus two other fulls this summer, crushed some time goals. Now I’m minutes away from a sub 3 hour marathon. Hyper focused because the goal is so exciting to me.

Context out of the way, I’m just curious how we’re scheduling and priodizing our running as we encroach into being higher mileage all year around.

I started running averaging 24 mpw annually with peaks in my training blocks of 65 mpw. This year I’m up to 35.5 mpw with a peak of 78 miles. I guess I’m wondering if we’re just continuing to scale our volume and up the speed as we progress, or how other people’s annual mileage ends up looking like when you factor all of your training in. And what’s your objective?

This is further confusing to me by the recommendations to run min 50-60 mpw to BQ for example. Are we recommending that people should have the base of running regularly 50+ mpw annually then starting a training block from that kind of base?

Attempting to lure bees into a box

Northern Canada 2B

Super excited, my neighbor enlisted my help to identify and possibly try to relocate a bunch of bees he found. The first nest were wasps. But the second appear to be honeybees.

Since they’re currently living in an area of the shed that is inaccessible, I’m attempting to lure the bees out into this bix on their own.

Ive got drawn comb setup in the nuc, there’s a bit of bee bread but not much else as I was nervous to attract wasps.

I’ve only ever captured bees once before, so I’m wondering what critiques or suggestions those more experienced could offer.

Grafted tree future pruning

I picked up this grafted tree, which is a first for me; it’s supposed to be four varieties. I’m assuming the bottom portion being the first then the three branches up top being the other three varieties.

I’m wondering what recommendations you might offer in respect to training and pruning this tree to maximize its potential.

I’m curious to hear what people think about this treatment? It’s not get approved in Canada, not sure if anyone can elaborate on why?

I could use some advice

At this point I now realize the mistake I’d made, which was letting this hive get away from me in the first place. Then the method of split I chose. I’m a new beekeeper.

That being said, I’m wondering the best way to go from here.

Here’s the full story:

I live in growing zone 2B northern Canada.

Captured this swarm last spring, they did really well over summer and filled 3 deep then swarmed into a neighbouring empty hive setup I’d had nearby. So I requeened the queenless hive. All seems well going into winter.

This spring comes, only the hive in the original box survived. Spring is wet, the bees are slow to building their combs. I get busy farming come back in 2.5 weeks and they’re busting out of the box with bees. I panic put an empty deep super on, instead of fully investigating further (I would’ve seen they were building a queen cell)… come back 9 days later with the new plan which was split the hive.

Put a queen excluder on the top box which I put brood and honey in. Waited 36 hours and removed the top box then installed my mated queen.

Fast forward to today now a week later, the new queen is alive and in the hive but only just released from the candy plug today.

I did an inspection today of my now insanely massive hive, and no surprise with four deeps packed wall to wall I couldn’t find the queen. I didn’t go through every single frame, for fear that I’d squish her. I did pull most of the brood frames and look through them and destroy any suspicious or wonky cells. I did find plenty of evidence of her being there, and actively laying as I saw plenty of brood in various stages which satisfied me. Overall most concerning was the one hatched queen cup and a decent amount of drone brood, which I destroyed.

I’m wondering if anyone knowledgeable would review this and suggest what the best plan of action is from here?
