In an interview with Escapist magazine in 2013, Toby Fox had this to say:

“Here’s some info from the demo, summarized (spoilers): A long time ago, monsters were sealed underground by the humans. Several human children have climbed the mountain, fallen down, left the RUINS, and were assumedly killed by monsters. One monster, “Asgore” is seeking the souls of these human children. Why?”

Considering all the human coffins are the same size as Chara’s (which would’ve been built specifically for them as monsters wouldn’t use coffins, and would therefore be a child-sized coffin), it’s safe to say there’s no implication that a human adult ever existed in the underground.

The game is clearly building up to drop something crazy in chapter 6, seeing as how chapter 5 is “the last funny adventure before the sun goes down,” and Chapter 5’s ending clearly leads us into assuming that Noelle is going to join the Dark World and potentially become a permanent member of the party. But something about all that seems suspicious to me, especially Kris’s actions the last time they and Susie see Noelle.

-Kris lays with face pressed against table, Noelle and Susie hang out for extended period of time. During this time, Noelle receives the phone call that makes her leave.

-Kris gets back up once Susie is alone, Susie expresses interest in following Noelle. Kris immediately makes a Dark World.

-In the Weird Route, after the festival Rudy appears to be out of breath at the bottom of the ladder, but he doesn’t exactly appear to have fallen down or anything, as Susie isn’t very panicked and is instead just concerned.

Notably, the holes in the table Kris was sleeping on are big enough to put your fingers through, so they’re definitely big enough to see through. It’s entirely possible that Kris was communicating using their phone, and it’s entirely possible that the phone call was actually meant to get Noelle somewhere else and that Rudy is not about to die (or maybe both things are true at the same time). The Dark World would of course be to distract Susie from following Noelle, so I’m worried that was actually the last time Susie is going to see her and that Noelle will never see Castle Town.
