What laptop to get for studying?

Sorry in advance, I know this stuff gets asked a lot here and I have looked though multiple posts, but I’m still not convinced about the right option for my situation specifically.

I’m on second year of University and I have 3 more years till I graduate. For the past year now I’ve been using an iPad Air M3 with a keyboard for my studies and I’ve noticed that it’s getting kind of hard and annoying because the applications that we use a lot like Word, Excel and Powerpoint don’t work that well on an iPad + multitasking with having multiple screens open has been a challenge on if as well.

Basically I want to get a Macbook for those applications as well as doing basic stuff like watch shows and check emails etc. I would still like to use my iPad on the side for quick notes and overall an extra screen.

I’m kind of stuck between the new Macbook Neo and the Macbook Air M5 (the newest ones cause I can pay them in parts which is ideal considering my income). Logic wise it seems that the Neo would be more than enough for my needs, but I have two concerns about it. One is that it doesn’t have a lit keyboard which I’m very used to as I study in different times and places and often even while traveling. The other is that I want the laptop to last me a while. I’ve read that the estimated lifetime for a Neo is 3-5 years (don’t know if that’s true) and I’d rather my laptops last AT LEAST the 5 if not longer.

I’m not really a tech person, I don’t really understand RAM and I can’t see much differences in screens etc. I just want the laptop to work for a long while and for it to work fast.

So I guess I’m asking that which one do you think would be better for me the Air or the Neo?

Looking at these today

I’m a second year geology student and we got to dig and look at these sediment layers today! They have been caused by glacial movement.
