I have always been fascinated by the influences of 18th century fashion and overall aesthetics in the 1850s. It's criminally underrated for preluding and setting the stage for the more obvious revival of the 1870s. This was in no small part thanks to the Empress Eugénie'd love for the period and all things related Marie Antoinette in fashion and interior design.

A few elements that stand out:

Pleats, flounces and ruffles very reminiscent of 18th century fashion.
Square and rectangular necklines.
3/4 sleeves ending in all sorts of decorations.
Floral, striped and Chiné à la Branche fabrics.
Triangular shaped details in bodices, reminiscent of stomachers.
Jacket-like bodices with a basque waist, a separate piece of fabric that extends further over the skirt, very similar to 18th century jackets like the caraco.
A "bulky" sillhouete reminiscent of the early 18th century robe volante.
Pagoda sleeves that resemble the notched sleeves of 1700-1730s allegorical portraits.
