L.A Noire might be Rockstar's most underrated masterpiece

I just finished my first playthrough of LA noire what a masterpiece.

I genuinely think it's one of Rockstar's most underrated games and one of the best games ever made. I really wish they'd make a sequel or revisit this universe somehow.

Everything about this game just resonates with me. It feels like every aspect of it was crafted with so much care, and it all comes together perfectly.

hard to believe this game is 15 years old. It still holds up remarkably well, there's something about it that modern games can't capture.

What a gem.

LA Noire fans, how do you feel about The Getaway series?

LA Noire is basically a spiritual successor to The Getaway, mirroring its approach of playing a police officer in a meticulously recreated city. All three games (The Getaway, The Getaway: Black Monday, and LA Noire) were written and directed by Brendan McNamara. Essentially, the creative leadership behind The Getaway jumped ship from Team Soho to form Team Bondi. (This led to Sony trying, and failing, to make their own The Getaway 3.)

Actually, to clarify/correct this point, what happened is that in 2003 McNamara left to form Team Bondi, and the rest of the team drafted and completed Black Monday using notes from his cowriter on the first game, Katie Ellwood. But after the game shipped in 2004, basically everyone important jumped over to Team Bondi. Even director Naresh Hiran who had stepped in to replace McNamara on Black Monday joined Team Bondi, the lead writer Alex Carlyle, basically all the leads... jumped over to Team Bondi. This left a huge vacuum and was part of why Sony struggled to get The Getaway 3 off the ground because basically everyone involved in the sleek cinematic presentation of the two games had left. It's why all the Getaway 3 stuff was so tech-demoey and not focused on story or characters or anything like that, just scenery.

But taking a step back, LA Noire is basically The Getaway 3, just set in America and with more of a detective work focus.

Anyway, in terms of me personally, I think that The Getaway games tell extremely good crime stories. (And in fact the PSP Spinoff Gangs of London ended up spawning a TV show of the same name by Gareth Evans that has run for multiple seasons.) However, MECHANICALLY The Getaway was always hugely problematic. It was like they were trying to reinvent the third person shooter with a bunch of experimental ideas that didn't ever really gel together. It's odd to play. Not a disaster or anything, but the quality of the cinematic presentation is far higher than the mechanical execution.

LA Noire does a much better job of syncing good feeling gameplay with the cinematic presentation, although I do think they never quite got the dialogue options nailed down. (See all the drama over "Truth", "Doubt", "Lie", and their attempts to paper it over with the remaster's "Good Cop", "Bad Cop", and "Accuse".)

My impression is that a lot of NA Noire fans are unaware of its origins and spiritual predecessors but I am sure a decent number, especially from Europe where the Getaway games sold quite well, are aware of it.

LANFEP Post #379: Grosse Building (Southern Pacific)

Post #379 for the LA Noire Freeroam Explorer Project — posting locations replicated by Team Bondi for LA Noire (currently touring the downtown area) that are not considered landmarks (either official or historic) but do have real-world equivalents.

This game is beautifully made

I first played LA Noire back in 2011 when it was launched. I had a gaming PC at the time, bought it on Steam and played it.

I remember loving the game and it left me one of those things that very few games do, yet I can’t name it. Like a sense of achieving something remarkable and leaving that imprint on someone.

Fast forward 15 years, I no longer have a PC but have a PS5. Some random night, I come across LA Noire in the PS Store and immediately buy it.

Currently playing the game at “The White Shoe Slaying” case. The dialogue is so sharp. Rusty is a perfect 1940’s macho with the misogynistic view and the whole shtick that was so common back then.

The cases are legit interesting, the voice acting is great, the Noire movie-feel feels real, and the game’s graphics and shooting/driving mechanics are much better than a ton of other games, including some GTA’s in my opinion (even though they’re from the same company).

I think they nailed the police aspect of it, especially when you become a detective. The relationship between the two of them, then with the coroner and the other processing cops at the station, their boss and so on.

Sometimes the story absorbs you in a way it feels that you’re watching a movie. It’s phenomenal.

LANFEP Post #378: Greyhound Bus Depot (Inter-State Bus Depot)

Post #378 for the LA Noire Freeroam Explorer Project — posting locations replicated by Team Bondi for LA Noire (currently touring the downtown area) that are not considered landmarks (either official or historic) but do have real-world equivalents.

Greyhound Bus Depot (Inter-State Bus Depot)

568 South Los Angeles Street

This real-life Greyhound Bus Depot (the name altered to Inter-State Bus Depot in-game, possibly to avoid conflict with the still-extant Greyhound Lines) operated at this site from 1924 until 1964; it was replaced with a new Greyhound/RTD station in 1967, which in turn remained active until 1991.

Why I picked the Suspect in the Studio Secretary Murder

What's difficult about this case is almost all of the information about the nights of the murder is from suspects who have an incentive to lie.

With that being said we can make out the following information from physical evidence and more impartial witnesses:

The victim was borderline homeless, had problems with alcohol, and had some form of a relationship (platonic or otherwise) with Mccaferry and Tieran.

In rhe morning she bought a thing of rye whiskey as a present for a boy: she was beaten with a tire iron and choked roughly around 0000 to 200; her body had a misogynistic slur I wont repeat carved into it and the letters "bd" (presumably aa a refrence to the black leliah killer; or him signing his work).

A letter beloning to the victim (and the other half found on the body), a male shirt soaked with blood, and a tire iron are found in Mcaffertys apartment.

Mccafferty (after several lies) admits the things were in his apartment but claims that because Tiernan came to him.and explained what he did; Mcafferty offered to dispose of the evidence.

After several lies Tiernan admits to being with the victim till approximently midnight till she left; he went to Mccaferies blackout drunk; Mcafferties showed him the evidence saud he came in with in; confessed to Mcafferty and admits its entirely possible he did it.

Both suspects lie their ass off; both run from the cops (admittingly Mcafferty doesnt the first time you talk with him).

Why Tiernan:

  1. The tire iron is more likely to be something he would use than Mcafferty.

  2. Mcafferry does raise a good point about how unliklely it would be that he wouls leave the evidence in plain view.

  3. They were fighting.

  4. He was at minium in very close proximity to the victim before she died.

  5. By his own admision its possible he did it.

Why Mccaferrty:

  1. Tiernans story mostly makes sense; his doesn't. They aren't shown to have a very close relationship so why would he risk a murder charge to help Tiernan? It could be his ideology of worker solidarity and sexism but its still a leap. He also didn't even dispose of the evidence so his story isn't even consistent.

  2. The evidence was in his apartment; yes he would have to be stupid to leave it there but he was dumb enough to lie to a homicide cop about his easily verifible criminal record.

  3. He does have a record of inflicting violence on woman for minor offenses which the victim did (knicking a book).

  4. A tire iron isnt that hard to find; and based on social class, manner of dress etc the shirt is more likely to be his.

  5. Tiernan while blackout drunk someone managing to beat her with a tire iron he probaly wouldn't have had on his person, choking her, then having the presence of mind to write a legible misogynistic slur and what is most likely a reference to a serial killer legibly into her torso with a branch is also a massive stretch (I do believe him when he said he was so drunk and angry he could have done it; he snaps at that point and its unlikely to help him based on what he knows). Maybe I can buy a guy drunk enough to blackout (and probaly can barely stand) to do the first two but the last one on top of that is just too much.

  6. We arent given any reason to assume Tiernan has unusually sexist views; Mccaferrty does. As such the carving is at minimum more likely to be Mccaferty; and his story doesn't place him near the actual body.

That being said they really should have checked the shirt to see who it belongs too based on size, dna etc and fingerprints on the letter/tire iron.

Based on the evidence presented I'd say what likely happened is she stormed out of Tiernans after some kind of fight; Tiernan drunk as a skunk pursued her but being that drunk didn't have much luck; she went to Mccaferty and told him what happened; annoyed with her petty theft and clingly nature he saw a chance to get rid of her and blame it on Tiernan; somehow got a tireiron beat and choked her; carved in the message and dragged her to the railroad and kept the items as a memento. Tiernan came to him and McCafferty saw the opportunity.

Off course thats not what happened but without the rest of the information from that desk it would check out.

Coles Motives during the Homicide desk

[spoiler]

So Phelps is obviously a flawed individual. I’d love to watch a video of a therapist analyze serval characters in this story and get reads on them, and Cole is easily the one I’d like to know most about.

At first he has a reputation for a Dudley do-right that is also very proficient at solving cases. During the homicide desk, he’s paired with a lazy, jaded, somewhat corrupt partner who is convinced the cases aren’t connected despite screaming evidence that they are.

Cole has an ego. It was crippled as a result of the war but it was there. He wanted to make a name for himself in the Great War.

During the Minos maketh the man conversation, Cole argues it would be better for his reputation for catching one huge case instead of 100 little ones.

Was this to keep the streets of LA cleaner you think, or so his career could continue on?

Major spoilers for the ending

Have you ever noticed that Monroe’s personal secretary got Cole killed. If she didn’t shoot jack then there wouldn’t have been a debate on who went up the manhole first saving critical seconds and probably enough for Cole to grab Hershel’s hand and escape

The Premise for "Buyer Beware" Was Largely Based on a Single Real-Life Case

I was checking the exported audio from the game files (thanks to Puterboy1), and I noticed the voice line for when Phelps tackles and arrests Edgar Kalou has "david_klor" in its file name. Searching "David Klor" online brings up a court decision "People v. Klor" which I wanna quote a few things from:

"The defendant was the proprietor of a jewelry store on West Fifth Street in Los Angeles located a short distance around the corner from a branch shoe shop. In the forenoon of June 12, 1946, a young lady employee of the shoe shop entered the jewelry store and began to look at watches. Shortly thereafter Kenneth Temple, the manager of the shoe shop, also came to the jewelry store and after a few words with the young lady left the store with her. <...> [Goldman] told the defendant that the young lady was on the point of buying a watch from him when he looked up and saw Temple and heard him say to her, "Is that the watch you are buying?"; that Temple began to examine the watch the young lady was interested in, compared it with his own, and "more or less threw it back" toward Goldman; <...> Goldman stated that <...> the defendant became very excited and secured a revolver from one of the showcases; <...> Temple then turned and ran out, proceeding down the street in the direction of the shoe shop. The defendant ran after him, firing four or five shots as he ran."

I don't think anyone discovered this yet. It's kinda cool to find out after all this time that the setting for the very first case is almost entirely ripped from real life :D Apparently it was a pretty important landmark case too

i just solved the consul's car w/o ever sitting down w/ valdez

playing la noire 4 the first time, completely blind. as soon as i found out valdez was a pedophile n that he was at wilshire demanding an audience i was like "i'm absolutely not putting 'kissing ass 2 a pedophile' as my priority i hope i waste his time" n went 2 follow up on the missing wrench lead instead. found the culprit's name from that n i was like "well this is actually more time-sensitive (bcuz he may know we're on his case) than the audience so i guess he's being ignored again LOL". one thing led 2 another n suddenly i was arresting the culprit n the case was over. motive was clear as day 2 me even if the case notes said that if i had conducted that audience i would've found out a motive. i do suppose i missed the joy of cole calling him a child rapist tho

If you could pick a partner who would it be and why?

For me it's Herschel the guy had his pension and possibly his life threatened by a corrupt police force and a powerful rich guy and still didn't turn on Cole plus he was super real and a stand-up guy the whole time.

Second would be Rusty because Homicide would be the desk i'd want and because the conversations and banter would be top tier.

And super unpopular answer but if I was super corrupt I'd pick Roy because we'd make an awesome dirty cop team and fill out pockets (you would need a contingency though because he'll throw you under the bus if you have to face the music)

And honourable mention to Berkowsky because we'd be near the same age and despite Roy calling him a pushover he held his own with the two gangsters.

Is this game frustrating only for me?

I don't understand.. I thought this game was pretty cool when I first saw a video on it. I always tried to avoid watching any reviews or gameplays after that and finally I started playing the game a few days ago and I didn't expect it to be this poorly designed.

Mostly I am extremely frustrated with certain cases where if you do something like going to a location earlier than another location the case might just be over and other locations and p.o.i's might get locked away so you don't get a 5 star. How was I supposed to know that for example going to the hobo camp in one case would just end the case right there and lock away the rest of it. What am I supposed to? Play the game with a walktrough?

Also the interrogation system started out pretty good but towards the end of the game it is broken. Like it is actually broken. Some suspects are giving straight answers not making any facial expressions looking like they are telling the truth and I don't have evidence against them and I press good cop because of that and its the wrong choice. Sometimes the suspect look like they are lying but then somehow they're telling the truth. Like reading facial expressions is pretty much useless right now for me.

Did anyone else get frustrated with this game like me? I like completing games %100 so I am constantly restarting and sometimes quitting and entering the game back and having to listen to the conversations again and again is also frustrating. Some might say just go with it when you make a mistake but I want to %100 the game and going back and doing all of these cases from the start to the end would be boring imo. I wish the game had a better interrogation system so we could actually use our brains and solve crime like detectives. But it just feels like a guessing game after a certain point.
