I'm mainly a prog rock/metal guy, but I recently discovered Mike Stern and got completely addicted to his ballads. I can't stop listening to them! Songs like "Common Ground," "Goodbye Again," "After You," and "All Heart." Also, not exactly a ballad, but "Little Shoes" has one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard.

Another song with this kind of vibe that I absolutely love is "Vento" by Toninho Horta.

Someday, I'd love to learn these songs on guitar in a chord-melody style. I've seen some covers, and they sound amazing.

I love bands that often sits in a middle ground between pro rock and prog metal, like Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Pain Of Salvation, some Opeth stuff, but i havent found any other bands that impacts me in this style.
