Fellow laid-off Amazonians: How are you handling out-of-pocket cert costs? (Pivoting to FinOps)

Hey folks,

I was caught in the recent layoffs after a six-year run driving operations and escalations. I’m trying to use the downtime to pivot into Cloud Ops and FinOps, but the transition costs are catching up to me.

I’m fully prepped to take the FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) exam this week to align my resume. However, LHH (our outplacement package) doesn't cover third-party exam fees. The standalone exam cost is a hard blocker while I strictly manage my severance.

For those of you who have upskilled post-layoff, how are you navigating these vendor certification costs? Are there secret alumni discounts, or does anyone happen to know of an active Linux Foundation code?

(If anyone still inside happens to have a spare enterprise exam code their team isn't using, please shoot me a DM instead of dropping it in the comments!)

Any advice on keeping these upskilling costs down is massively appreciated. Wishing the best to everyone else navigating the job market right now.

Question for Managers: Navigating out-of-pocket vendor certs (like FinOps) after a layoff?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice from the leaders in this sub. I recently wrapped up six years at Amazon driving operational efficiency, but was caught in the tech layoffs. I'm using this transition to pivot into Cloud Ops/FinOps.

I am fully prepped to take the FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) exam this week, but my outplacement package doesn't cover third-party exam fees. The out-of-pocket cost is a hard blocker right now while I strictly manage a severance budget.

For the managers here: when you are hiring transitioning professionals, do you expect them to eat these vendor certification costs out of pocket? Are there secret job-seeker discounts, or do you occasionally have unused enterprise training codes your teams let expire?

(If anyone happens to be sitting on a spare one-time code they wouldn't mind parting with, please shoot me a DM!)

Any advice on keeping these transition costs down is massively appreciated.

Prepping for SAA but need to take FOCP first—any active discount codes?

Hey folks,

I was impacted by the tech layoffs after six years in operations at Amazon, and I'm pivoting into Cloud Ops. I am prepping for my SAA, but I want to knock out the FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) standalone exam this week first.

Since I'm paying out of pocket right now, I wanted to see if anyone knows of any active Linux Foundation or FinOps discount codes? If you happen to have a spare one-time enterprise code from your employer, please shoot me a DM instead of dropping it in the comments so bots don't grab it.

Any advice is massively appreciated before I pay the full fee out of pocket. Thanks!

Advice on finding FOCP (FinOps) exam discount codes? Paying out of pocket after a layoff

Hey folks,

I was recently impacted by the tech layoffs after six years on the operations side at Amazon, and I'm using the downtime to pivot into FinOps and cloud cost optimization.

I’m fully prepped to sit for the FinOps Certified Practitioner (FOCP) exam this week to align my resume for some specific roles. Since I'm paying for this out of pocket right now without a corporate training budget, I wanted to see if anyone knows of any active Linux Foundation or FinOps discount codes? I am only looking to cover the standalone exam.

(If anyone happens to have a spare one-time code from their employer, please shoot me a DM instead of dropping it in the comments so it doesn't get sniped.)

Any advice or leads would be massively appreciated before I pay the full amount out of pocket. Thanks in advance!

Transitioning into FinOps: Looking for any active FOCP discount codes or unused enterprise vouchers

Hey everyone,

I am pivoting into a dedicated FinOps role after wrapping up six years driving operational efficiency and escalations at Amazon. I was impacted by the recent tech layoffs, and since my outplacement package doesn't cover third-party certifications, I am completely self-funding this transition.

I’m fully prepped and ready to sit for the FOCP exam this week, but the $325 standalone fee is a bit steep while managing a severance budget.

Does anyone know of any active discount codes for May, or does anyone happen to have a spare enterprise voucher from their employer that they aren’t going to use? If you do have a single-use code or voucher, please DM it to me directly rather than posting it in the comments so it doesn't get snagged by a bot. Any leads would be massively appreciated. Thanks!

I am trying to keep the repair costs reasonable for our family's washer, so I am handling this troubleshooting methodically to rule out variables before buying more parts.

The Short Version: My original board hits an F11 error. Because there is absolutely no motor attempt or hum before the F11 triggers, I suspect a CCU to MCU communication issue, making the CCU the primary suspect. I bought a used replacement CCU listed as WPW10137701 on eBay, but it arrived missing the secondary Service Code sticker entirely. The replacement board powers up, locks the door, and then immediately freezes the UI.

Unit: Maytag Neptune MFW9600SQ0

Original behavior (Original CCU has the W10137701 Service Code sticker attached):

  • Cycle starts
  • Door locks
  • Small water fill
  • F11 error pops up
  • No motor attempt at all, completely silent (Leading to my theory of a CCU to MCU communication failure)

Action taken: Replaced CCU with the used eBay board. The replacement board has the generic Type 10824 hardware sticker, but the secondary Service Code sticker is completely missing.

Behavior after CCU swap:

  • Powers on
  • Locks door
  • Only last selected cycle light shows
  • UI becomes completely unresponsive and freezes immediately

My Questions for the Experts:

  1. Since the eBay board is missing the Service Code sticker, does an immediate UI freeze heavily point toward a firmware mismatch from a seller misidentifying a generic Type 10824 board?
  2. Given the original F11 symptom of zero motor sound before failure, is my logic sound in suspecting the CCU over the MCU?
  3. Does anyone have a trusted source for a tested, used board with a verified W10137701 Service Code sticker? I am trying to stay around the $70 mark that this mislabeled board cost. Direct links to verified listings are highly welcome!

Looking for experienced diagnosis, not general part swapping.

Unit:
Maytag Neptune MFW9600SQ0

Timeline:
Was working normally a few days ago
Now failing at the very start of cycle

Original behavior (CCU W10137701, Type 10824):

  • Cycle starts
  • Door locks
  • Small water fill
  • Then F11

No motor attempt at all
No hum, no spin, completely silent

Action taken:
Replaced CCU with WPW10137701 (same part number + Type 10824)

Behavior after CCU swap:

  • Powers on
  • Locks door
  • Only last selected cycle light shows

UI completely unresponsive after that
No inputs register
Stuck immediately

Key difference:
Original CCU reached fill before failing
Replacement CCU freezes right after startup

Other detail:
Found clothes stuck under door gasket (may have been there a while)

Constraints:
Replacement CCU (~$70 tested used) can be returned
Trying to stay frugal and avoid blind part swapping

Working theory:
CCU issue (possible incorrect variant/firmware) vs MCU failure

Questions:

  • CCU vs MCU based on this pattern?
  • Seen a CCU swap cause full UI lock like this?
  • Best way to verify CCU compatibility beyond part number + type?
  • Reliable sources for tested W10137701 / WPW10137701 boards?

Trying to stay within known failure patterns before replacing anything else.
