I took a few more creative liberties than usual, so this design is something of a guilty pleasure for my tastes. I probably won’t go with this exact design for the final version, but it is certainly fun to look at. Who knows, I might recycle some of the elements into other designs. ^^

A redesign sketch for a god in one of my stories. (More info in the description)

So this is a sketch I did recently, and a lot of it was just drawing lines onto a body outline. I’m planning on adding more details later on.

I wanted to do a redesign for a god character in a medieval fantasy series I’m planning, and while I had initially planned to make a more fantastic/kitbash-type armor that combined the various cultures I had used for inspiration (including North Africa and Central Asia), I kept inching back to more Eurocentric designs, probably because that’s what I’m the most familiar with. I’ll have to do a better job of this going forward.

At any rate, the story itself is set in a time period similar to the late 15th century (particularly the 1480s), but I based the armor of the god characters off of 16th century harnesses, intending the anachronism as way of illustrating how advanced they were compared to the mortals.

Despite this, I also wanted to incorporate the 15th century ”Al-Antica” style armor into the design, since I thought its use in depictions of ancient heroes would be a good reference to this character’s status as an immortal and divine protector. To keep as much of the 16th century harness as I could, I decided to make what would otherwise be a brigandine into a simple garment worn over the armor instead, similar to a late 14th century jupon. Ultimately, in terms of time periods, the inspirations are all over the place, but I’m still kinda happy with what I have so far.

Looking For Resources On Different Cultures During Late 15th Century

Hello again, everyone. I’ve been meaning to start my hobby of illustration/character design back up for a while now, and I wanted ask for resources for cultures I plan to read up on.

I‘m making a story with armor designs inspired by different real world cultures during the late 15th century (particularly around 1485), and I was particularly looking for information on armor from:

  1. The Great Horde, and other successor states to the Mongol Empire/Golden Horde
  2. Northern/Western Africa, both indigenous and imported
  3. Eastern Europe; such as Russia, Crimea, and the surrounding states.
  4. The Timurid Empire, and/or their successor states in the aforementioned time period

I would appreciate anything you all can offer. Thanks in advance!
