Have you ever had "the worst day ever on bikes"?
Did a bike race yesterday, and it was all going well until it wasn't.
A soon as we hit the checkpoint at the "top" of the climb, a misty day turned into a group traumatic event. Montana spring weather threw everything she had at us. Wind, hail, gropple, sleet, snow, rain, even some new sky shrapnel that I've never experienced; what seemed to be icy shurikens tearing through the sky.
Many didn't finish. I've never been so cold and miserable on my bike before, and I've done some downright stupid rides.
One friend crashed in the descent and broke his pelvis in 3 places.
Hands were so numb I couldn't even tell if I was braking let alone be able to change gears.
Everyone i talked to at the finish was in agreement that it was the worst bike experience they'd ever had.
I managed to finish out of pure spite and stubbornness. Cursing the weather, the road, my choices etc. Cresting the final hill and seeing the end was a magnificent sight.
Untold thousands of dollars of equipment destroyed. I've yet to assess the damage on my own bike, but I'm sure the brand new chain is toast, and the cassette may be as well.
I think I went from type 2, to type 3 "fun" at the top of that climb and only came back to type 2 at the end when a beer hit my hand.
0/10 do not recommend
I got second place in my division though. 🫠
