Aldershot School has a bigger Tree of Heaven problem than I thought

Aldershot School has a bigger Tree of Heaven problem than I thought don’t know how many photos I can attach. Although there is some sumach and I think I spotted one black walnut if it looks like tree of heaven here it is TOH.

It’s on edds maps now and I suspect all throughout the wooded area down to north shore there are more of them

A wee unwelcome bouquet of TOH

I have a neighbour with a mature tree of heaven. I have been trying to remove some false Solomon seal from a patch and left the soil in a pile.

The pile is now showing small TOH seedlings crop up.

At a few cm they still smell like rancid peanut butter and unlike black walnut they do not have a degraded nut attached.

If you deal with them when small not too much needs to be done.

I was at Aldershot School for the pool recently and noticed that the TOH near the entrance from Fairwood Place is creating a small forest of trees in the planting beds near the front doors.

Tree of heaven seedlings pull as soon as you see them

These are only about 12 inches (30cm) it’s a good time after some rain pull them out if they have “thumbs” on the leaves and smell like rancid peanut butter. They are tree of heaven.

I am about equal distance from a Black Walnut and a Tree of Heaven each tower over the neighbours houses.

As long as you get them early you just have to worry about next year’s seedlings

I pull all of them I want neither.

Messaged the city about Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima)

After reading the spotted lantern fly have been collected on the Ontario side of the Niagara River and the Detroit River I decided to email the city asking what they intend to do about the dozen or more Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) on city property namely the trees at Spencer Smith.

I got a received your email we are working on it, a we are still working on it and then a concluded email.

Has anyone ever received anything from the city about these trees now that the province has them as invasive. They have allowed new trees to grow in the last 12 years (so before the province declared them as invasive) but long after they have been known as a tree you should not let take hold ( the bottom of Elizabeth and Pearl at the promenade both have 3 metre or more tall trees which should have been removed.

I really wonder how they will like the sooty mould staining concrete and everything thing else when the spotted lantern fly make it to Burlington

Rant over
