Gift for NP student friend

Hi all! One of my best friends started NP school last month and is a bit stressed. I think it's a combo of work, family, and now school that is causing it. Do you have any recommendations for something I could send her (she lives a few states away) that would be helpful (I'd like it to be specifically for her, not her husband or kids)? Appreciate any suggestions!

Leaving a new job after only a few weeks—how would you handle it?

Leaving a new job after only a few weeks—how would you handle it?

I'm looking for some advice on the best way to resign from a job I've only been in for a few weeks.

I recently started a research compliance role at a large academic/research medical center. Almost immediately, I realized it wasn't the right fit.

The position turned out to be much more administrative than I expected. Instead of the policy development, quality improvement, and strategic work I thought I'd be doing, much of my time has been spent tracking training compliance, updating webpages and materials, coordinating documentation, attending meetings, and facilitating workgroups.

I've also realized I'm personally uncomfortable working in an environment that supports animal research. I understand why it's done and respect the science, but it's not something I feel comfortable being part of.

My manager hasn't treated me unfairly, but her communication style is much more abrupt than I'm used to, and I don't think we're a great fit. The person training me has been difficult to follow (she blames her ADHD), but it's been bananas to stay organized and document/understand the processes this way. She's also given me wrong instructions, then left me to fend for myself to figure out who to contact to fix the issue.

Another kicker is that the manager lives out of state (far enough she has to fly in) but expects us in the office at least 2 days for "visibility," which is bonkers. Overall, I know this isn't where I want to build my career.

I'm actively applying for other positions, and while I don't have another offer yet, I've decided I'm going to leave regardless because staying longer will not change how I feel. Also, I'm finishing school so I can use that for the gap in my work history.

My biggest concern is how to resign professionally. I don't want to burn bridges, and I don't want my manager to think this is a reflection on her or the team. We have our weekly 1:1 and want to just tell her and offer 2 weeks. It really comes down to the role not matching what I'm looking for and realizing it isn't the right long-term fit.

For those of you who've resigned very early into a job:

  • What did you say?
  • Were you honest about why you were leaving?
  • Did you give two weeks' notice, or longer?
  • Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently?

I'd really appreciate hearing from people who've been on either side of this situation—both employees and managers.

Would you stay at a new job when you KNOW it's not a good fit?

I took a job after a 7-month search and had high hopes for at least a one-year stay. ~4 weeks in, and I know it's not working and won't change. It's one of those instances where if I could have shadowed BEFORE taking the job, I would never have taken it, but you do the best you can with what you know.

Would you stay or leave, and how do you leave after such a short time? Hate this "disloyal" feeling but isn't it better to say something now vs 3 months after being fully onboarded?

Help! Orange/brassy highlights disaster - can this be fixed at home or do I need a salon?

Hi everyone!

A few months ago, I went to a salon wanting light brown/caramel highlights. The stylist did a partial foil on the top layer of my hair, so the underneath is still my natural dark brown color.

Instead of caramel, the highlighted sections came out much blonder than I wanted. Before a wedding, I went to a different salon to have it toned down. They applied a toner, and it looked pretty good for a few days, but then the toner faded.

Now my hair looks awful (at least to me). The top sections are orange/brassy (actual orange), while some of the ends are a lighter blonde/light brown color. The contrast between the orange top and lighter ends looks really uneven.

Since then I've tried what feels like everything at home:

  • Blue shampoo
  • Vitamin C tablets
  • Purple shampoo
  • Color-depositing products/glosses
  • Various toners

Nothing seems to make much difference to the orange.

My questions:

  1. Is there anything I can realistically do at home to fix this?
  2. If I need a salon correction, what exactly should I ask for?
  3. Would I need another toner, a gloss, lowlights, an all-over color, balayage, or something else?
  4. Is it possible to get to a soft caramel/light brown look without bleaching again?

I don't want to be blonde, and I definitely don't want orange. I'd be happy with a natural-looking caramel/light brown result.

Thanks for any advice!
