Working on the two-tone version of the rest of the set.
The rust and texture are real oxidation from the filament, then I clear coated the pieces afterward to help preserve the finish.
Still experimenting with settings and finishing techniques. Has anyone here run the ProtoPasta iron PLA extensively? I’d also love recommendations for strong long-term settings for chess pieces specifically — wall count, infill %, top/bottom layers, nozzle choices, sealing, wear concerns, etc.
Current specs:
King — 4.58” / 130g
Queen — 4.05” / 99g
Bishop — 3.67” / 71g
Knight — 3.60” / 80g
Rook — 3.10” / 79g
Pawn — 2.55” / 41g
I also included a bishop/knight comparison shot since a few people mentioned the knight height. The knight’s point sits near bishop height while the main head mass stays closer to rook height.
A few people mentioned the original queen might be a little thin around the waist and less comfortable for fast play, so I decided to experiment with an alternate silhouette while trying to keep the same overall feel of the set.
I still personally love the original profile, but I’m curious which direction people think works best aesthetically.
The pieces are printed with iron-filled PLA, oxidized for real rust and texture, and weighted with steel inserts.
Still prototyping and refining a few things, but I’d love feedback on the overall direction.
