Omaha Tiki Recommendations

Hey there! The wife and I are headed to Omaha for a conference next weekend and I’m looking for any tips/recommendations r/Tiki can provide. We’re staying a block from Laka Lono Rum Club, so I’d love drink recs there. Is Revival House worth the trip out? Thanks!

Help - In search of a specific mug

A while back, I came across a mug online that was inspired by the iconic exterior designs of the Polynesian Resort at Walt Disney World. Unfortunately, I didn’t save it and now cannot find the mug anywhere. Is it possible I hallucinated? Attached are examples of the designs mentioned above. Can anyone here help? Thanks so much!

Inferno Room Zombie

Shout out to @TibaltLowe for sharing the Inferno room Zombie specs they had used. I remade it as best as I could and the result was amazing - honestly one of the better cocktails I’ve ever had. My adjusted specs are as follows:

/4 oz Honey Syrup

1/2 oz Cinnamon Syrup

1/2 oz Grapefruit Juice

1oz Lime Juice

1 bar spoon of grenadine

3 drops of Absinthe

3 Dashes of Angostura Bitters

1/4 oz Falernum

1 1/8 oz Hamilton 86

1 1/8 oz Smith + Cross

I’ll be traveling to Indianapolis to visit Inferno Room early next year - looking forward to trying out the real thing!

Help me Tiki-fy my bar!

I finally got shelves up to display my mug collection. It’s a small, well lit space, but I’d love any advice on how you doctor up the tiki in this corner.

The Spice Trader (Foundation Bar)

I was looking for a recipe this evening, something I had never had - I stumbled upon a thread of favorite tiki cocktails started by u/pmc4812 and the first comment on said thread was from u/GrizzlyPear_ singing the praises of the Spice Trader at Foundation Bar in Milwaukee. Foundation is the closest tiki destination to me and while I’ve been several times, I ’ve have never had the Spice Trader.

Unfortunately, a little digging reveled no specific recipe for the drink listed online, so I found myself doing a little research. Huge shout out to u/coocooforcooking and u/bamboobetty for doing the majority of the leg work here. Their listed specs were the base for my shot at the recipe. u/Away_Supermarket9228 and u/Strange_Ocassion_408 had some additional insights that pointed me toward my eventual destination. My recipe is as follows:

1oz Smith + Cross Jamaican Rum

1oz Hamilton 96 Demerara Rum

1.5 oz Coco Lopez

3/4 oz Orange Juice

3/4 oz Lime Juice

3/4 oz Cinnamon Syrup

1/4 oz Vanilla Syrup

1/4 oz All Spice Dram

I didn’t have Old Monk Rum on hand, so I had to make do with what I had. I had seen specs that called for between 1/2 oz of Lime Juice and 1oz of Lime , so I split the difference. Another user had mentioned vanilla extract, but I settled for equal parts vanilla syrup and all spice dram.

Initial reactions to this recipe: this is something special - Again, having never had the original cocktail at Foundation, I’m sort of flying blind here, but flying nonetheless. I whole heartedly recommend this spec, however, I’d ask that folks who have experienced the cocktail in the past try this recipe and see if it’s anywhere close to the original. What can be added to improve this recipe?

The Expedition

I’ve owned Smuggler’s Cove: Exotic Cocktails, Rum, and the Cult of Tiki for a few months now. I’ve been gradually making my way through its recipes, but there’s been one I’d wanted to try since day one, but never had its necessary ingredients. After picking up a bottle of Mr. Black earlier today, it was finally time to embark on ‘the Expedition.’ I even broke out my Pineapple Lanai “mug” for the occasion. My recipe is as follows:

1oz Lime Juice

1/2 oz Cinnamon Syrup

1/2 oz Honey Syrup

1/4 oz Vanilla Syrup

1/4 oz Mr. Black Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur

1oz Smith + Cross Jamaican Rum

1oz Hamilton 86 Demerara Rum

1oz Buffalo Trace Bourbon

Poured over 2oz Seltzer Water

This may very well be one of the best cocktails I’ve had. Everything is so balanced and the Coffee Liqueur leaves a nice lingering flavor on your palette that makes you reach for another sip. Highly complex and equally crushable. I cannot recommend this recipe enough!! I think I’ll have another.

Wishing you all (who are attending) a very happy Tiki Oasis! Have a wonderful (and safe) weekend!!

Does your Mai Tai recipe differ?

Town Under Siege

I’ve recently been toying with the idea developing a riff of on a Tiki Old Fashioned - my original introduction to craft cocktails was the Bourbon Old Fashioned. The recipe I developed is as follows:

2 oz Jamaican Rum (Smith + Cross)

1/2 oz Lime Juice

1/2 oz Vanilla Syrup

1/4 oz Allspice Dram

1 Dash Angostura Bitters

Lime Peel

I realize a proper Old Fashioned doesn’t include fruit juice, however I decided to add 1/2 oz of lime juice after initially trying the recipe without. It opens up the cocktail nicely but doesn’t overpower any of the other ingredients. The Dram and Bitters work nicely together and balance well with the vanilla syrup.

After mixing the ingredients in an Old Fashioned glass, I smoked the cocktail by charring oak chips, giving the cocktail its distinct characteristic from which I derived its name.

The mix of smoke in the air along with a sweetness or rum and spices compliment the chaos of a pirate attack and Bromine Water. Anyone who has ever ridden the Pirates of the Caribbean at either Disneyland or the Magic Kingdom know exactly what I’m talking about.

The specific stages of the ride are known as the “Town Under Siege” and “Burning Town.” Which of the two do you like better for a title? I’m also planning on experimenting with Tiki Bitters in the near future to see if I can replace the angostura/dram mixture. Do you have any other recommendations on how I can improve this cocktail?

I cannot recommend this drink enough.

Hello from Hala Kahiki

I was traveling near Chicago today and found myself with a little free time. Decided to make a stop at Hala Kahiki in River Grove, IL. First off, thanks to all of you that chimed in with recommendations earlier in the afternoon - I opted for the “Nectar of the Gods”:

Overproof Demerara Rum

Navy Proof Jamaican Rum

White Jamaican Overproof Rum

Ginger Liqueur

POG Juice

House-Made Egg White Overproof Buzz Button Foam

Would highly recommend the cocktail and more importantly, the Hala Kahiki itself. This was a fantastic spot. I was the second to arrive after opening this afternoon and had a fair amount of time to mosey around and check out the rooms and decor - phenomenal! I was even able to pick up one of their “Chi-Tai” glasses before I heading to Gene and Jude’s a block away (the dog and tamale were on point).

An early evening at the Bamboo Room

The wife and I spent a little time in Chicago this past weekend - no trip to the city is complete without the obligatory stop at Three Dot and a Dash. We nabbed a reservation at open for the Bamboo Room and had a wonderful time! We both started with the Clairvoyant Missionary, a clarified riff on the Missionary’s Downfall. Possibly one of the better cocktails I’ve had - would highly recommend. I next had the Saturn Frappe (I enjoyed this, though I’d prefer a well made Saturn in its place) and my wife went with the Jamaican Ten-Speed (this cocktail was far more cocoa forward than either of us expected - I enjoyed it). We also met a couple from Minneapolis and chatted for a bit - we mentioned we each spent a little too much time on r/Tiki, so if you see this post, chime in! Overall, it was a spectacular experience and would recommend to everyone looking for a more elevated tiki experience.

Rooms, Event Spaces for Gathering

Hi there,

I am hosting a Fantasy Baseball Draft in Indianapolis next March and am trying to get an early head start on planing our event. I’m searching for a venue, room or part of a restaurant or brewery that could easily fit 20 to 30 attendees. At the very least, we’ll need a WiFi signal and access to a bar.

I’ve already reached out to the following venues and am currently awaiting responses:

Upland Fountain Square

Rathskeller

Fountain Square Brewing

Chilly Water Brewing

Sun King Brewing

Ralston’s Draft House

The Garage

The Dugout Bar

I’ve secured a hotel block near Gainbridge and do not want to stray too far from Downtown, Mass Ave or Fountain Square. Any additional recommendations would be helpful and much appreciated.

Coconut Mai Tai

Huge shoutout to u/Bingbangpews for sharing their specs for a Coconut Mai Tai a few days back - had to try it out myself; made some minor adjustments. Recipe is as follows:

1oz Lime Juice

3/4 oz Coco Lopez

1/4 oz Orgeat

1/4 oz Orange Curaçao

1oz Hamilton 86 Demerara Rum

1oz Hamilton Breezeway Blend

I really enjoyed this cocktail. I saw someone describe this recipe as a riff on a White Cloud - after trying that recipe, I believe this Coconut Mai Tai to be far superior.

I’d like to further tinker with this recipe and its specific specs - does anyone have any recommended adjustments that could be made?

I cannot recommend this recipe enough! Thanks u/Bingbangpews!

Poolside Mai Tai

It’s a sunny warm and sunny Sunday in Wisconsin that calls for a Mai Tai. Amended recipe is as follows:

1oz Lime Juice

1/4 oz Simple Syrup

1/2 oz Orgeat

1/2 oz Orange Curaçao

1oz Hamilton 86

1oz Hamilton Breezeway Blend

It know it’s now a proper Mai Tai, but it makes for a great poolside sipper. Hope you’re all having a wonderful weekend.

With the Kentucky Derby coming up, I was craving a proper Mint Julep. While searching for recipes, I came across an interesting twist on the run-of-the-mill julep recipe from u/kirkl3s that added rum to the equation to feature more molasses on the palate. I took that recipe and tweaked it slightly - my recipe is as follows:

1/2 oz Vanilla Syrup

10 Mint Leaves

Muddle Mint with Syrup

Remove Muddled Mint

1/2 oz Demerara Rum (Hamilton 86)

2.5 oz Bourbon (Wild Turkey 101)

Heaping amount of Crushed Ice

Stir liberally

Generous garnish of Kentucky Colonel Mint

Having formerly lived in and around bourbon country, I’m quite familiar with a julep; this might be the best I’ve had. The vanilla syrup and Demerara rum adds a complexity that bourbon alone can’t provide in this particular cocktail. Have you ever had a “tiki” julep? How can I improve upon this cocktail?
