Tamil traditional aesthetics have always had a very distinct identity Kanchipuram sarees, traditional colour palettes, Kemp jewellery, mukuthi, double-sided nose pins and our characteristic gold jewellery. These aren't some newly invented “South Indian aesthetic”; they've been part of Tamil visual culture for generations.

What I find odd is the growing trend of Malayalis adopting very specifically Tamil-coded elements especially Kanchipuram sarees in traditional Tamil colour combinations and double-sided nose piercings and then presenting the whole thing as simply “South Indian.”

Malayali culture already has its own incredibly distinctive aesthetic: the white kasavu saree, mundu, traditional gold jewellery and regional ornaments. Why is there suddenly such an obsession with reproducing Tamil markers instead of building on that identity?

Nobody is saying you can't wear a Kanchipuram saree or a nose pin. Wear whatever you like.
