Short Term Review Of The New 2026 Dell XPS 14

Got my 2026 Dell XPS 14 on May 7th and have been using it every day since for school, projects, and normal productivity stuff. Specs are Intel Core Ultra X7 358H, 32GB RAM, 1TB storage, and Intel Arc B390 graphics.

Mostly using it for Word, PowerPoint, Canvas, Canva, Google Slides, YouTube, Chrome tabs, and general multitasking. No gaming so I can’t really comment on that side.

Overall, performance has been really solid so far. I ran Cinebench R2026 multicore and got a 3269 score. Peak was around 3550 before settling lower during the sustained run, which I’m guessing is normal thermal/power behavior for a thin laptop.

Battery life has actually been pretty good for me. With normal school/productivity use, I’m usually getting close to around 2 days before needing to plug it in again, depending on brightness and workload.

A few things I’ve noticed though:

  • The backspace key felt a little weird/soft at first compared to the other keys, but honestly it seems like it’s gotten better over time with use.
  • Yesterday I randomly had some screen flickering while just sitting on the home screen. Restarted the laptop and it’s been completely fine since, so not sure if it was drivers or Windows.
  • In HWiNFO after running Cinebench, “Core Power Limit Exceeded” shows “Yes” under current and maximum with 100%, and a bunch of the LP E-cores also show “Yes” for current/min/max. From what I understand now, that might just mean the CPU is hitting the laptop’s configured boost/power limits during benchmarks rather than an actual issue.
  • Occasionally right after restarting, temps spike up to around 98-100C for a second before dropping back down quickly. Under normal use it doesn’t stay there.
  • Cinebench also showed a weird “MHZ_ESTIMATE=inf” reading once, which I’m assuming is probably just a reporting bug.

Other than a few little bugs here and there, the laptop runs well. I’m guessing some of it could just be early drivers/firmware since these chips and GPUs are still pretty new.

Overall though, for school and productivity use, I’ve been liking it a lot so far.

Curious if anyone else with the new XPS 14 or Intel Ultra 200H series laptops has seen similar behavior or anything different.

Hey everyone,

I’m an incoming college freshman and I’ll be majoring in Cybersecurity Management & Analytics (so kind of a mix of business + IT). My workload will probably include:

  • Running virtual machines
  • General IT/cyber tools
  • Programming + labs
  • And also a lot of business apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

I’m looking for a reliable, long-term laptop, and I’ve been really interested in the new Dell XPS 14 (2026).

I had a few questions:

1. OLED vs LCD

I’m trying to decide between:

  • OLED (2.8K / 3.2K options)
  • LCD (non-touch)

From what I’ve seen:

  • OLED looks way better (colors, contrast, etc.)
  • But I’ve heard it can have worse battery life + possible PWM issues?

For coding, long study sessions, and general college use:
👉 Is OLED actually worth it, or is LCD the smarter choice?

2. Reliability / Issues

I’ve seen mixed things about XPS in general:

  • Some people say they’re amazing
  • Others mention issues (thermals, touchpad quirks, etc.)

For example, I saw people mention things like:

>

How reliable are the newer XPS 14s actually?
Are they good long-term (4+ years), or should I be worried?

3. 2026 vs Previous Gen (2025 / “Dell Premium”)

Would you guys recommend:

  • Going with the new 2026 XPS 14
  • Or saving money and getting the previous generation (2025 / Premium)?

From what I’ve read:

  • New one has better design + battery improvements
  • But older one might be better value

4. General Advice

For my use case (cybersecurity + business):

  • Is the XPS 14 a good choice overall?
  • Or would you recommend something else instead?

Extra context:

  • I don’t game much
  • I care about performance + reliability > looks
  • Want something that’ll last through all 4 years (and ideally beyond)

Would really appreciate any advice, especially from people who actually own or have used the XPS 14 🙏

The SPEC I have right now as an option:

Picked up a Surface Laptop 7 recently and wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Overall, I liked the design, keyboard, screen, and battery life, but I ran into a few issues pretty quickly. The first was a creaking/clicking noise on the bottom/back area right around the Microsoft logo whenever light pressure was applied. It made the build feel less solid than I expected for a premium laptop. (15 inch model)

I also had occasional random screen flickering, which was concerning on a brand new device.

Another weird issue happened while trying to do some video editing in DaVinci Resolve. Instead of properly using the video encoder, it seemed to be pushing workload onto the 3D engine, which made performance seem off.

I took it to Best Buy and compared it with their display model, and the demo unit didn’t have any of these problems. Since mine seemed different, I ended up returning it.

Now I’m debating whether to exchange for another Surface Laptop 7 or move to something else entirely.

My main question is reliability/longevity: how long do Surface laptops realistically last? I’ve heard some people say 2 years, others say 4+ with no issues. As a college student, I need something that can last at least 4 years without constant headaches.

Would appreciate honest long-term experiences with Surface devices, especially newer models. Thanks.
