Leslie Fish's "Elfland" now available!

After 3.5 years and $35,000 (ouch), the next massive project in our effort to preserve & restore Leslie's unreleased performances is now available — honoring Leslie's unambiguous wish to see her music carry on long beyond her lifetime.

Elfland is a huge collection of previously-unreleased Fish recordings:

  • 17 live concert tracks — featuring Leslie's more lighthearted songs, mostly performed 2000-2001.
  • 6 new studio bonus tracks of Leslie's space filks — produced by Kristoph Klover and Michael Moricz.
  • 7 live bonus tracks — songs we wanted to preserve (but whose performances didn't quite meet the album's quality bar)
  • 24-page photo booklet — capturing many never-before-seen photos of Leslie's time in fandom.
  • 3.5 hours of Leslie's original concerts — from ChiCon 2000, LosCon 2000, ConChord 2001.

Purchase link here: https://www.prometheus-music.com/product/elfland/

Beyond Hope Eyrie, remaining studio tracks were produced by Kristoph Klover. Backing musicians include Michelle "Vixy" Dockrey, Doug Olsen (who you may recall from Minus Ten and Counting) — and I'm sad to say — the final studio vocal recordings we made of Vic Tyler before his passing.

In transparency, this project (and the Pegasus album) were significantly overbudget; at present, my accounting shows Leslie's music category about $17,000 in the red. If you'd like to see more Fish restoration projects like these continue immediately — rather than in 2028 or so when sales/streams catch up — please consider voting with your wallet and buying a copy, rather than just streaming this project.

Anyone duplicating indie cassettes in Seattle?

I recently inherited about shrinkwrapped 500 CrO2 tapes (42-ish min, can find out). The tapes are identical, and are all of one microgenre album by a friend who passed away.

Anyone in Seattle area home-duplicating indie cassette projects who might have a use for some of these as blank media or otherwise?

Looking to rehome at no-cost to actual music makers (not resellers). Otherwise, will just resell on eBay myself to free up closet space for my next CD run arriving next month.

Pointers welcome, too. Already pinged Vera Project and Drongo Tapes.

FREEBIE: King of Filk — Quentin Long (1993 cassette tape)

I just received 700 copies of this 33 year old filk tape, and am looking to rehome as many of them as realistic.

These are intended as something you get for free when ordering other stuff from the Prometheus Music website — but realistically, I probably won't invalidate any US-based orders for just the free tape + $4.75 shipping.

Prometheus Music - full Spotify discography (1997-today)

In case it helps anyone discover more filk on Spotify, I've set up a chronological playlist with all the filk released by Prometheus Music from 1997 to today.

That's 246 songs, or ~16 hours of music, from Leslie Fish, Julia Ecklar, Kathy Mar, Phoenyx, Bill and Brenda Sutton, and a whole bunch of other folks.

More to come this late summer / early fall.

Taper's Guide to Recorded Filk Music (1991 update)

Created by Glenn Simser, this is a pretty comprehensive compilation of recorded filk as of about 1991.

Thx to u/Acceptable_Fish4820 for providing the copy to the FANAC Fan History Project, who digitized it and put it online.

You can find other filk history items on the FANAC website here: https://fanac.org/fanzines/Filk/

"Hope Eyrie" - a psalm for Apollo 11 (2026 re-release)

In 1976, Leslie Fish wrote a fairly remarkable anthem to celebrate the Apollo 11 landing, "Hope Eyrie".

(At least, 'remarkable' is the word that Dr. Roger Launius, formerly NASA's chief historian, used to describe it. He also wrote about this song in his 2005 paper, "Perceptions of Apollo: Myth, nostalgia, memory or all of the above?”, as well as in his other writing.)

Although Leslie has sadly now passed away, I wanted to share a new, labor-of-love recording of this song (using a decades-old vocal recording), that about 20 of us have been working to bring to life over the past year.

The producer is Michael Moricz (who was the final music director for PBS's Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.)

Lyrics can be found here: https://filketymology.fandom.com/wiki/Hope_Eyrie

Credits & producer's notes for this new track can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQW7TANzZ9Y&lc=Ugwu84rJwY_ONlC_QwB4AaABAg

You can see if you've been blocked on their Facebook page by checking whether it shows up when you view it here: https://www.facebook.com/cdbaby

If you see "This content isn't available right now" rather than their page, you've probably been blocked.

I haven't heard back from 3 emailed requests to ask them whether their Stages program still exists (since the free Stages Plus submission codes they provided me no longer work, but they still have a website advertising the program: https://cdbaby.com/music-distribution/stages/#plus )

But when I went to their Facebook page, I noticed that they had blocked me. Curious how common this is?

Also, kinda ironic that:
a. They're effectively forcing customers to air our dirty laundry publicly - by THEIR own design. That's because they only respond to problems when we air them on social media now. (I'd certainly rather have just spoken privately with a support person and gone back to higher-value activities, as a full-time music publisher.)

b. They're seemingly blocking the people who are most invested in their service *actually working*. (Back when they had a UX team, I didn't even let them pay me for being a usability study participant because I GENUINELY CARED.)
