Any tips on smoothing out the back of ikea furniture?

Any tips on smoothing out the back of ikea furniture?

I bought a skubvy cabinet and it's clear that it's made to go up against a wall, because the wood on the back is really rough.

I have the back of the cabinet up against the back of my couch, and the rough unfinished back sticks out a bit, so I was thinking of sanding it, treating it in some way, and maybe painting to match the rest.

Does anyone have experience doing something like that? In particular, what sort of oil/lacquer etc would work?

Has anyone tried painting with that shade of blue that they use?

I just got back from my first scuba trip, which was to cozumel. I had a great time and am looking to schedule another trip for this summer, maybe July.

In terms of affordability it looks like cozumel or honduras (roatan or utila) are the best options for me. Anywhere outside the Caribbean is not an option. When I went to cozumel I didn't notice any diseased or bleaching coral, but I've heard Honduras might be in much worse health?

Any advice from people that have been to both recently (ie, since the major bleaching events of the past few years)?
