Canadian wildfires seen from space
I’ve seen a lot of wildfire satellite imagery, but this one genuinely made me stop for a second.
These images from LandViewer each cover nearly 12,000 km² and were captured from about 786 km above Earth at 10 meters per pixel. It’s rare to see a wildfire this large with a smoke plume stretching across almost the entire scene.
My thoughts are with everyone affected by the fires and the crews working to contain them.
Found this satellite image from July 2, when the wildfire near Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal was just beginning
it’s hard to imagine how large it must have been on the ground when the smoke was already so visible from space...

The Eye of the Sahara [so distinctive that astronauts have used it as a landmark from orbit]
One of the few places on Earth that’s easier to appreciate from space than from the ground.

Hundreds of shades of blue across a remote Pacific atoll in Kiribati
While looking at this atoll from space, I was fascinated by how many shades of blue can exist in a single place! Curious about Kiribati, I ended up reading more about it and learned that it’s one of the first places on Earth to welcome a new day.
Estadio Azteca, Mexico City — the only stadium in history to host FIFA World Cup matches across three different tournaments (1970, 1986, 2026)
Am I the only one who thinks Beijing Daxing is one of the coolest-looking airports ever?
I’ve seen plenty of photos of Daxing’s interior, but the view from above is what makes it stand out for me. It somehow manages to look like a starfish, a spaceship, and an airport at the same time
Hard to beat, honestly. What’s your pick?
