A half-hearted defense of the Rick and Morty news
When I saw that a Rick and Morty movie is coming together at Warner Bros, I knew exactly what the online consensus would be: “Isn’t it ten years too late?”
Maybe. Or maybe not. If Rick and Morty is going to be the WB equivalent of The Simpsons—meaning, an animated sitcom that can keep going and going, despite no longer being at the center of pop culture—than no, it shouldn’t be too late.
I really do think that’s where WB is with Rick and Morty. The initial craze around the show has subsided, but nothing has supplanted it as WB’s top animated sitcom. Currently, it occupies two-and-half-hours of Adult Swim’s nightly schedule, and that’s with fewer than 100 episodes (still!) to cycle through. It’s become a warhorse that’s endlessly re-watched by its fans. That's why it's the only Adult Swim series with an Uno edition.
Of course, none of that means a Rick and Morty movie will, without a doubt, be a big hit. This movie will be as much of a question mark as—yep—the upcoming Simpsons movie.
If the notion of finding out if Rick and Morty has the same legs as The Simpsons sounds a little lame, well, that’s why this is a half-hearted defense.
