Get a fucking grip. Last night was honestly one of the weakest episodes I’ve seen in a long time. The whole Republican misogynist trope is so old, really at a time when the abhorrent way women are sexualized and ridiculed is once again a headline in the media and Gillis finds a laugh by calling women whores? If he was funnier maybe I’d take it but I’m so sick of seeing him everywhere. Not even funny. Kudos to the cast for trying to prop him up and what a phenomenal job Rosalia did but I hope they’re not planning on him hosting again any time soon.

Edit: here come the men in the comments trying to explain why it’s ok to degrade women for how they dress. Disgusting.

I’ve been noticed the *audience* has felt cold in the room this season, and Shane Gillis‘s monologue really exposed that.

I think some of it was that a few jokes depended on the audience being titillated by specific word choices, and that he relies on the excitement from more right leaning audiences about taboo/familiar subjects (he had a pause for a Rogan name drop that got nothing), but the guy bombed.

And he knew it. What a horrible feeling. A couple of the jokes he petered off and didn’t land because they required (I guess) a raunchy word? Or he was counting on his mugging to the audience to get the laugh?

When a comedian goes “that was the monologue” because his final joke missed, you know they know It. I’m not saying anything one way or the other about his content - but I’m wondering if there was such an unsuccessful monologue as this - 7 minutes! - in recent memory?

Why must we suffer through a Shane Gillis episode once per season for the last three seasons when there are incredible celebrities who have NEVER hosted or haven’t hosted since like, 2010.

I’m sure there are plentyyyy of industry considerations (agents, contracts, upcoming projects, ratings, etc.), but there are so many interesting, talented people who have never hosted or haven’t hosted in years, and somehow we’re getting him for a third time.

And… a joke about women dressing like “whores” and name-dropping Joe Rogan in his monologue? Check! We’re all just living through the headlines about the Cornell 7, but it’s no big deal, I’m LOVING ur edgy takes on women’s bodies/how they dress or whatever!!!

Then we head right into a cop sketch where the only person he isn’t hard on is a drunk woman cuz he’s flirting with her (I love u tho veronika)? Check! [edit: of course, I know the sketch is making fun of cops and real-life situations like the one I mention below, I just didn’t find the writing or delivery funny enough to laugh instead of think about the material it was making fun of, but I know it’s subjective].

I live in Canada, and in April, a story came out about how members of the police force in Ottawa were abusing their power and using their access to database searches to stalk/hit on/target women. So, while i tryyy not to take SNL too seriously, I’m sorry, but that sketch didn’t hit for me either.

It’s been hard to pay too close of attention to the rest of the episode because I’m sitting here wondering why we’ve never had any of the following hosts even once yet I’m watching this guy again (some aren’t big-league famous necessarily but would be a dream for meeee specifically):
Florence Pugh, Amanda Seyfried, Annie Murphy, Eugene Levy, Ali Wong, Parker Posey, Chelsea Handler, Nathan Fielder, Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson, Lamorne Morris, Hilary Duff, Chris Evans, Tom Holland, Kathy Bates, Bo Burnham, Ben Schwartz, Benito Skinner, Mary Beth Barone, Rosalind Pike, Lisa Gilroy, Domhnall Gleeson, Stephen Colbert, John Legend, Hasan Minhaj, Ronny Chieng, Chris Parnell, etc.

I knowww stars are usually hosting to promote a project, but there are many booked n busy actors who haven’t hosted in over a decade, and while we can say, ‘maybe they were asked to host and said no,’ COME ON dude. Ted Lasso came back but we didn’t get Sudeikis again. Anne Hathaway staysss on our screens but hasn’t hosted since 2012. I could think of more examples but I am TIRED (it’s likely many people we as the audience would love to see aren’t being considered, even when they have high-profile projects on the horizon). I’m mostly tired of Shane Gillis hosting to promote another season of a new-ish Netflix show that I ironically only watched because Veronika was on it. Anyway that’s my pointless rant! I wish Lorne would think a little more outside the dang box when it comes to hosts! I beg!!!

This whole set was from the NYC Still Rising After 25 Years: A 9/11 Charities Comedy Benefit at MSG. I was there and I remember it clearly and it didn’t get many laughs there either.

When they introduce the musical guest, I'm like "Cool, WU is next (finally).

Last night was like holy shit, she's amazing, even had me looking forward to her 2nd song.

All I want to say is that Mikey Day has been absolutely killingggg it the past few seasons. I wasn’t a huge fan when he first came on but I’ve been loving him recently!! He’s on par with some of the greats fs.

It specifically talks about a how he loves controversial hosts. Lorne says when Steve Martin asks why he brought him back as a host

“He’s the number one comedian in the country.”

Bill Hader said this on Bill Simmons podcast in 2009. Look at the cast when the host and musical guest are doing good nights,if they're standing close behind they had a great week. If they're this far back....

I love Grace. I love that she's getting prominent roles in sketches even though it's her third episode, I knew her from before she was cast and know she's fucking hilarious. But where the hell is Saidah Belo-Osagie? We're seen her in like one small role in one sketch per episode. I know people write their own stuff and make her sketches just aren't making it but it feels weird that there are two rookies this year, one has already gotten quite a spotlight and the other had like two lines in last night's episode. Again, no shade to Grace, and frankly no shade to anyone -- I just want to actually see her because I feel like they've yet to "introduce" her to the audience like they did Grace.
