Actuary or engineer

I’m entering my sr year of high school and trying to choose a major/career. I’ll be going to UW-Madison.

Edit: both majors are housed in separate uw sub schools and both are very competitive to get into, and are generally even more difficult to get into once admitted to UW. So deciding before is a significant advantage.

I’m pulled toward being an actuary because UW has an elite program where classes count as taking actuarial exams. It would lead to a simple, high paying job that would likely have great wlb.

I’m pulled towards engineering because it appears to have a greater positive societal impact, would likely be more interesting, and may even let me at some point work on cutting edge tech such as spacecrafts, planes, etc. it would also leave a path open to being an actuary later.

I would also love to live in Colorado or somewhere in the west.

Any advice on how or which choice to make?

TLDR: Should I major in actuarial science or engineering?

Actuarial Science

I am planning to apply to UW as my first choice for actuarial science at the business school. I have a 3.97 uw gpa, 8 APs, and 2 dcs, 33 act (35 math and 36 science). But I don’t really have any business clubs, and don’t feel like this is really a business major. Will my lack of business ecs result in me not being likely to get direct admit or scholarships despite my academics?

Also would anybody who has been in the program be able to talk about how gross the pipeline is? I would really love to move out west after graduating, specifically Denver area if possible. I’m not sure if I’m being unrealistic is assuming I can kinda pick where I go.

Shin Splint Prevention

I’m a sprinter and hurdler and have struggled with shin splints my freshman sophomore and junior year. My junior season just ended, and I want to rehab my shins to prevent any pain next season.

The pain is on my inner lower shin on both sides, but generally one side is significantly worse. (Usually the side I jump off of to hurdle, but transitioned to the other leg once hurdling stopped late season).

There is so much info, and lots of people swear by different approaches to prevention. What worked for you?

Some info if necessary: 155 bw, about 6 ft, squat:265x4 bench:185x3, 400:52ish, 200:23.8, 300h:43.3

A few essay ideas

I’m currently brainstorming some ideas for my college essay. I’m planning on applying at UW-Madison, specifically at the business school for actuarial science.

Ideas:

Knowledge grows uncertainty, not certainty - talking about how I expected for everything to make sense as I grew up

Finding that discomfort/struggle is what gives value - 400m track races

Being against burial practices - starting line like “Let the worms eat me.”

Wanting to major/learn everything

Not listening to music - enjoying silence

Enjoying making healhty choices and discussing how this choices show care for ourselves
