Manipulation at its best!

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share this vintage advertisement with you today because it perfectly illustrates how much our collective perspective on health, food, and body image has been systematically altered over the last century.

Take a close look at this vintage ad for "Wate-On."

If you look back 80 to 100 years ago, the global conversation around health was completely flipped. People back then didn’t fear beef, butter, or whole milk. These were foundational, nutrient-dense staples of the human diet. Keep in mind that "Ultra-processed food" didn't exist yet. People cooked with real, single-unaltered ingredients, fats and because of this, metabolic diseases were incredibly rare compared to the epidemic levels we see today.

But the most striking difference? Nobody was obsessing over how to lose weight because obesity was rare. In fact, as this ad boldly screams at the top, the cultural fear back then was being "SKINNY"?

Because most people were naturally lean from eating whole foods and living active, non-sedentary lives, early advertisers recognized a massive commercial hurdle: they couldn't sell weight-loss products to a population that didn't need them so they manufactured a brand new "problem" to sell a solution that wasnt such.

Magazines and newspapers began flooding the public with advertisements shaming women for being "thin, skinny, and underweight". They created products like "Super Wate-On Tablets"—packaged in hyper-palatable flavors like Banana, Strawberry, and Butterscotch—specifically designed to force weight gain. They marketed a heavier, more filled-out figure as the ultimate standard of health, beauty, and vitality. Introducing highly addictive products with one only purpose in mind; profit.

Once corporations and the media realized they could manipulate public perception to sell solutions to problems they created, the floodgates opened.

Shortly after this era, industrial food production truly took off. The commercialization of orange juice and fruit juices stripped the natural fiber from fruit, turning nature's whole food into a concentrated dose of liquid sugar marketed as a health staple. Then came the rise of hyper-engineered ultra-processed foods—designed specifically to override our natural satiety signals, highly shelf-stable, and incredibly profitable.

And just like that, the snowball began to roll.

Fast forward to today, and we are experiencing the full avalanche. The exact same corporate system that once shamed people into buying tablets to gain weight now profits off a multi-billion-dollar weight loss industry, synthetic diet foods, and the chronic illness management that follows.

It makes you stop and realize: the physical "problems" we are told to fixate on are rarely about our actual health. They are almost always about creating a new market.

So next time you look at yourself in the mirror and don't see the body you believe you need to have, take a second and reflect on it.

I am 60 now, and I have learned rather than trying to measure up to the absurd standars that were design to sell us stuf, perhaps the solution resides in going back to what used to be before the industry revolution and put a stop on becoming about one of their clients.

How do you think we can best untangle our personal health journeys from the noise of modern food and beauty marketing?

I 'd love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments below:
