Do any international students feel studying abroad is just a huge consumption downgrade?
I’m really torn about whether I should go back to China right now. Flight tickets are ridiculously expensive, and the accommodation fee I paid here is basically wasted if I leave early.
Back in China, I never cooked at all. I lived in a 5-story villa with an elevator, I barely needed to walk a single step. I could order takeout anytime I wanted, and going out for nice meals to take pretty photos was super easy.
But life here is totally different. I feel like I’ve become a full-time housewife and maid all at once. I’ve even thought about getting a part-time job, like working in a milk tea or coffee shop.
At home, I always took taxis everywhere. Now I walk almost everywhere every day. I even have to walk to the supermarket to buy groceries regularly. It really feels like I dropped straight from middle class to working class overnight.
I can’t help wondering… what’s the actual point of studying abroad? Does anyone feel the same way?
Also I’ve noticed Chinese and Indian international students are actually pretty similar in some ways. A lot of us like buying luxury items. But local students here are generally not that well-off, and they’re way more used to taking part-time jobs to support themselves. No offense to anyone, just a real observation.
