Car-based infrastructure is not bad.
Ok, I’ll admit there is a lot to like about walkable, public transit based cities. Efficiently, convenience for shorter trips, lower cost, pollution reduction, but there are a lot of drawbacks.
First, is the experience. On a bus or a train, you’re at best sitting on a germ covered seat surrounded by strangers, and at worst cramed standing nuts to butts with said strangers and possibly dangerous people on your way to a station that smells like piss. In a car, I get to sit in a comfortable leather seat, listen to music or a podcast or whatever without having to listen for dangerous situations, control the smell and temperature, it’s nice, even if there’s traffic. And I control the pollution problem somewhat by driving electric.
Second is convenience. Yes, I would be nice of the immediate area around my house were more walkable, but the fact that cars enable you to go basically from your door to the door of wherever you want on your schedule is a freedom people don’t appreciate.
Lastly, there’s culture around cars. People like their cars. People restore and maintain classic ones out of passion. People go to car shows. People watch classic Top Gear episodes. There’s something to say about cars just bringing joy to a lot of people.
Just something to think about before advocating that we should all live in cramped high density apartments and take the subway to work.
