Something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time.

Something I’ve been meaning to do for a long time.

When I first got into the Haunted Mansion in early 2020, I remember the 2003 movie being something I explored top to bottom, mainly in regard to its costumes for the Ghosts.

And I remember one thing I wanted to do at the time, was to find a way to redesign some of the costumes, not cuz I didn’t like them (Mona May’s costumes are beyond a spectacle to me) but because I wanted to draw the characters from every corner of the franchise, a lil more historically accurate to whatever period the ghost emulates based on costume alone.

This particular lady (who you can see in the Graveyard scene having tea with the parasol gal) was one I’ve been trying to redesign numerous times before, but each attempt didn’t sit right with me, both because the style I had at the time wasn’t so polished and at worst, really bad. And cuz the internet’s a really difficult place to find good references for Fashion plates and clothing.

But now? Oh Apollo, I feel immensely vindicated in finally being able to do what I was unable to 6 years ago. And I’m really proud of the concept drawing I made.

Ps. I’m mainly doing this for fun and to scratch that fashion history itch I got.

Gem#71 Sulfur

This is probably the cutest design I’ve made so far in my opinion.

I struggled finding a Gem type for her, but I went with Sulfur after finding out they grow near Starfish habitats, and come in yellow. It seemed all too convenient, and bam!

I was picturing Lilo when designing her and thinking of her personality.

A thought that popped in my head

Okay, first of all, I have a gut feeling I was not the first one to think this, so this isn’t really a theory I myself made. If it feels that way, I’m sorry.

But anyways, I had this thought based on the scene of Mary’s house in the movie slowly warping into what would be standard Backrooms fare (I.e fluorescent lights, yellow wallpaper and drop ceilings galore) earlier after waking up from a nap…

What if this scene is trying to explain just how areas in the Backrooms look the way they do. It’s all anchored to the memories these rooms spawned from. Memories aren’t accurate recordings, each time you remember you don’t ACTUALLY remember that exact memory, you simply remember the last time you remembered it, so if it keeps going on and on, more details can get lost till, well…

What if the same goes for the Backrooms? At first the rooms look familiar albeit a lil off, with objects taller, warped or distorted, but for all intents and purposes, they’re similar enough.

Then as one remembers and forgets, they’re more that room changes. Wallpaper starts to change or loose details, furniture alter or melt, etc. You remember the room and what’s in it, but what they look like exactly, that no longer seems to matter.

Rinse and repeat, till eventually… you just don’t remember it at all. And to coincide with that, the area finally distorts one last time, assimilating with the rest of the Backrooms, just another den of ugly yellow walls and gross carpet floors…

It can be anything, a college student who forgot what his classroom back in high school looked like, a grown man failing to remember what his childhood bedroom looks like, or an elderly senile patient failing to remember ANYTHING entirely. All that results in the ever-expanding hell that is the Backrooms, and has been and will always be till the end of time.

Any thoughts? I bet this sounds a lil ridiculous…

My first ever post here

I don’t know if this counts as “liminal” but it is a vibe I got from it.

Basically it was a bookstore at this mall I frequent. I remember running into it and saw that due to some “violations” or whatever, it was closed down, then a few days later, it was open again to my confusion. I wandered inside for a short time cuz we had to go, but it was nice to see it opened again…

Then a few days later, in our next visit to the mall I passed by the store and was shocked, it was empty, everything was gone… it was a shocker for me and there was an equal feeling of emptiness I felt in my soul. That bookstore was there at the start when I first visited the mall a few years ago, the bright red, the books, the wooden puppets animated on motors above, all the whimsical objects here and there that added to the atmosphere…

Now it was gone, and I was never getting it back… almost feels like another mocking sign from the universe with how much I’ve been feeling life passing me by, and everything that felt comfortable was either leaving me behind, or no longer giving me the same kind of joy I once got out of it…

I’m sorry if that sounded too melodramatic, I was trying my best to put into words how I felt about it all…

Got bored and was watching some Little Nightmares Gameplay, and idly, I drew the Mirror Man… I like what I did with the smoke, but idk.

Gem#65 Amber

This design combines two different things; The giant Red Dragon Gem seen in one of the comics, and a bubbled gemstone seen in change your mind.

I chose to make Them Amber after finding out that Amber was a common material used in Chinese culture when making imperial and Elite Dragon-themed relics and Amber was among the jewelry found in the excavation of an old tomb belonging to a Ming dynasty princess.

I based their design on the Longwang, Dragon kings of Chinese Mythology. And I imagine them as being an overseer of some kind, of what? Eh, dunno.

Gem#62 Yellow Prehnite

I’m thinking that each Prehnite of specific colors, come with different designs, and considering the fact that they’re statues, I bet it really didn’t matter so long as they looked elegant.

She appears in concept at alongside the main Prehnite we know (the green one) and I wanted to make her an autonomous form to coincide with my headcanon that all immobile gems were given proper bodies by the diamonds around Era 3.

Gem#61 Grey Iolite

She appeared in the game, and I’ll admit it was DIFFICULT designing her cuz the only image we have of the Water Bear gems uncorrupted was in Change your mind while half submerged in water, this design made by Mysticplies https://www.tumblr.com/mysticplies/182919611299/a-gem-that-loves-her-puffy-jacket-3 was the next best thing as it made a whole lot of sense.

I imagine her as being a bit of a daydreamer, often with her head up in the clouds until someone jolts her back to what’s up. A total Ophelia. Why? Cuz I think it’d be funny.

Gem#43 Rose Quartz

Before I go talk about this particular gem, I’mma tell ya that despite canon, all Rose Quartzes I’ll draw have 6-sided gemstones despite canonically having 5-sides only. The reason is mainly a personal itch; I want all the Quartzes to be a little more consistent as Rose Quartzes seem to be the only outlier despite being no different from any other ordinary Quartz (So far at least?) so there’s that.

Anyways, for this particular Rose Quartz, I presume the statue is donning a helmet of some sort, but I thought it’d be fun to design her as being a Wrestler, and I had her designed almost immediately.

Ps. I just noticed most of the quartzes I’ve designed look more like boxers/fighters in terms of attire. I didn’t think much about it, but looking at it, I think it’d fun if that’s basically what most of em are doing in Era 3.

Ps#2 This was technically supposed to be Gem#42 but I forgot about her, posting Crazy Lace first, so hehe oops!

Gem#42 Crazy Lace Agate

Not a lot to say about this design other than the fact that I like it. It was fun drawing all the patches and splotches all over her body.

Gem#41 Azurite

It honestly wasn’t that difficult to design her, I saw the silhouette, and went with this. The only thing that I didn’t think of at the time, was the patches all over her skin. I forgot that most Azurites have patches all over its surface, so I immediately re-tweaked the design before finishing it up.

Ps. I’m not the only one who decided to identify this gem as an Azurite. MysticPlies on Tumblr did it first (I think) and I simply found it convenient.

Gem#39 Yellow Mother of Pearl

I was surprised how quick I got to a proper design for her.

I went with Mother of Pearl, not just because they’re similar to Pearls, but because they’re also used in Construction, thus befitting for these Oddly Pearl-shaped Wall Gems.

Gem#38 Limestone

Out of all the Gems that existed purely as Architecture, I feel bad for these ones. Their expression is literally pure AGONY in the one shot they’re in. So within my headcanon, I’m sure they were BEYOND grateful to gain actual autonomy.

I mainly chose Limestone, mainly because they’re used in construction, that’s about it. It was really difficult sketching her, especially her large staff. But all’s well ends well I suppose?

Gem#32 Pink Nephrite

Found some concept art on the Steven Universe Art book, and upon seeing what seemed like Nephrite/Centipeetle concepts, I wanted to make a design based on this older design. As it just so happened, Pink Nephrite does exist, leading to this design I made.

I had this joke with a friend that this particular Pink Nephrite is the less obnoxious equivalent of the “um actually” phrase, where she’d constantly correct her superior’s directions in regards to where’s where in the galaxy. Not that it didn’t make her any less annoying.

Gem#31 Heliodor

I’m not sure what to do with this. I don’t know how on earth a statue of a Fusion managed to get erected on Homeworld with such detail considering that the act is mainly considered a means to an end sort of thing. Though right now as I’m typing this, I just thought; mainly this particular statue was used as a message to Gems, of what an ideal Fusion must be; the combination of two similar Gems. With that out of the way, my new wonder is what Gem is the statue modeled from?

Conveniently I found a Bubbled Gem with a similar cut, specifically from the cover of the first issue of the 2017 Comic series. And so, I immediately figured; Heliodor.

Being a type of Beryl, she would be up there with fellow Beryls like Emerald or Aquamarine and so I can imagine her being a fusion in such a way, but still having to stay by the restrictions of being similar Gem types.

I’m thinking of her as being a little stuck-up and snobby.

Gems#23-30 Turquoises

There was a post in this group that made a headcanon that the Statues outside Blue Diamond’s onsen are Turquoises and I wanted to work on idea (original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/stevenuniverse/s/RJX6Rx9s5u)

With the same headcanon I have Prehnite, in the midst of Era 3, the diamonds (mainly Yellow, cuz of course she would) decided to try and grant mobility to all the stationary gems on Homeworld, either giving them proper bodies or granting them the means to move around freely. For these statues, their limbs had to be cut around the joints and a black substance formed around them, allowing them to move their arms, legs and neck properly. For those who didn’t have a certain limb, this black substance would act as arms. This is mainly a way to incorporate the fissures of Real Turquoises into their design.

I imagine them being as big as Pink diamond, and as for roles I’m not sure. Possibly as maids to Blue Diamond, ladies in waiting of some kind. In terms of clothing, it’s based on Togas and Sarees, and I love the finished product.

Gem#22 Prehnite

Oh I’ve been DYING to make this! Made a lot of sketches and concept doodles but many led nowhere. But now? I finally found a design for the Disco Gem that I actually liked.

My idea behind Prehnite having a body is basically a headcanon I have that in Era 3, many of the Gems that were simply structures, art, statues, or objects were constructed bodies by the Diamonds or given proper movement to walk around and socialize with fellow Gems. Prehnite being one of many who was given this opportunity, and now she’s able to spread her melodic voice outside of the Ballroom.

I designed her head to resemble a Hijab, and the Dress was kinda based on the stand that Prehnite as an immobile structure stood on. I chose Prehnite not just because of the color and it’s possible facet options (well, kinda was) but also because of its association with sound and soothing emotions. What better purpose than for the Gem whose whole job is to give soothing sounds via her singing?

Gem#21 Jadeite

I mainly drew this for fun. She appears in a cover video of Life on Mars by Jinx Monsoon, aka the voice actress for Emerald. Jadeite appears in the beginning and is played by Jensyn Clement. I mainly drew this as a hypothetical design and nothing more, but I’ll still add her to my batch of other Gems anyways.

In terms of physical appearance, I pictured her as one of the taller Jades seen in Together alone (the one with the turtlenecks) and while unintentional at first, her shoulders now look like those of a Filipiniana, and I like it.

Gems#17-19 Jet

Honestly, out of the few uncorrupted Designs I’ve made, this one was probably one I didn’t put much thought into (with them looking like any generic goth with less sci fi looks to them), which sucks but it is what it is. They appeared in Issue 7 of the Steven Universe Comics, with the main problem that being it’s all in black and white so technically these Three Creeps probably have a different color in actuality, but at the same time, I’d kill for more White Gems considering the fact that we barely see any in both shows.

I went with Jet being their Gem type, and it played into a lot of their current attributes, mainly the black clothing. Historically, Jet has been used in Mourning Jewelry, so for it I designed the three to look like they’re heading for a funeral, and for their Gemstones to act as part of their attire, just like the Gem irl. I also used their Gem’s historical use as a tie-in with their abilities, because in the story they come from, they’re able to shoot beams out of their gems which results in teleporting whoever the beam lands on. What else would you do if you’re in grief? Escape, vanish… teleport?

I like to see them as something akin to Keening Women, created for the sole purpose of expressing grief on behalf of the more stoic and serious gems on Homeworld. Heck? Maybe that’s how they got stuck on earth, they were brought to grieve for Pink Diamond, only to get caught in the corrupting light?

Gem#16 Adder Stone

I had just returned to my Witchcraft phase (though admittedly it never left as I kept Tarot Reading) and as it just so happened, I was working on a witch-like gem, so that was a neat coincidence.

I’m not exactly sure how Adder Stone would’ve fit with the rest of Homeworld, as she’s more magical-esque than the rest of her technologically advanced rock kin. But I like to think that WAY back, in the earlier days of Era 1, most Gems probably had this fantastical edge to the. While still being ahead of the curve than other alien races. Her power lies in being able to search for lost things by looking through the hole in her Gem, be it lost objects, ships, or even lost Gems.

Her design was meant to evoke witchiness and the gem having a hole that even went through her hand was an especially I particularly liked. Her snake-like eyes were meant to reference Adders, cuz duh.
