Achieving mastery as a blind person in ONM

Hey guys, so I’m a legally blind adult living in Philadelphia PA and I am trying to find mobility instruction. I used to navigate using my vision with GPS apps but can no longer do that. I was wondering if anybody knows about resources forgetting ONM instruction. BBVS has a waitlist of six months. I want to get to the point where I can have full awareness of directions and street names and be able to take buses and trains independently. Even if people don’t have specific advice, I welcome people to share their overall experiences. What are realistic expectations as a blind person to navigate? Do I need to be shown a specific place in route by an instructor every time I want something new or is it even possible to navigate a place that I have never been to before just with technology and the proper apps

Which online college is best for blind students?

Hey guys. I am considering switching my online program because I find that the accelerated format can sometimes be overwhelming. Additionally, the disabilities office can be a hit or miss. I really like western governors competency based program, but they told me that there are some issues with their accessibility for their computer science program. Does anybody have any recommendations for which colleges are better or more suited for people with disabilities as well as which colleges are more flexible?

Broken braille displays

Hey guys, so I have a focus 80 blue fifth generation braille display. It’s been serving me great, but ever since I had to repair it about a few months ago because the space bar was giving in. I started having other problems too. They first sent it back with a broken dot. I think it was around braille cell number 46 where a pin was stuck. I sent it back to them. They repaired it and sent it back to me. It’s been about a month and a half, and now another pin seems to be getting stuck. I think FedEx also has the tendency to abuse packages because when I got it back last time I had it double boxed and it looked like there were multiple stab wounds that went through the box. How do people deal with these issues? I want to get a backup braille display but I think my counselor feels like I want to stockpile braille displays. That’s obviously not what I want. They are expensive but this is just ridiculous. I rely on braille for doing Most stuff. I’m doing pre-calculus right now and no one is doing that in audio.

Tactile rendering with the monarch

Hey guys, so my school is purchasing for me to have on loan the humanware monarch refreshable tactile display for use in my mathematics courses. I have to take pre-calculus and calculus towards my computer science degree. While the monarch has a graphing calculator, it seems to have difficulty rendering pre-generated images. I tried to provide a workflow for my college to export graphs in SVG format from Desmos, but it doesn’t seem like they have a workable solution for pre-generated images. While I can use the graphing tool on the device myself, the ability to have it view effectively pre-generated images of graphs and other geometric things is pretty essential to the course. Does anybody have any suggestions on a potential workflow or file formats that would enable the monarch to view pre-generated graphs and other images with proper labeling? I would also need proper tactile representations of circles with angles and radians. There are just a lot of visual components of such courses that would make it hard without proper tactile rendering. The shapes of certain geometric figures and graphs aren’t the problem so much as it is to have proper braille labeling while also maintaining the proper geometry of things.

Wrist pain from extensive braille reading

Hey guys, I’m typing this in a rush using dictation so if there are any typos, just don’t take offense. Does anybody experience wrist pain while reading braille. I went to the doctors the other day because my right wrist was hurting and they told me I had tendinitis. They basically just said to use common sense and gave me some anti-inflammatory medication. The doctor said whatever hurts just don’t do it. I’ve tried to modify and adapt my brail reading strategies to minimize wrist aching, but it feels like I inflamed my wrist again today This is the first time that something like this has ever happened to me. My hope as is that it won’t be an ongoing thing because I have a pre-calculus class coming up, which will require me to use math and do a lot of heavy braille reading and typing.
