Not Like My Father, Chapter 4, now released

New chapter, chapter 4, of "Not Like My Father" is now available. This is my idea of what a Doc Martin movie could look like.

The fan fiction site has been REALLY buggy lately, so if you have trouble getting to the chapter, the AO3 link should work. I THINK you can post comments in either place.

Season 2 Newbie Podcast Portwenn

New Doc Martin Newbie episode for season 2 available.

Patty the Newbie is back for Doc Martin Season 2 with the perspective of a full season of Best Medicine behind her, and she's not shy about the comparisons. Elaine Denham (Lucy Punch) is gone, replaced by the far more competent Pauline Lamb (Katherine Parkinson), and PC Mark Mylow (Stewart Wright) gets his heart broken when his fiancée's paternity test doesn't go the way he hoped. Martin Ellingham's (Martin Clunes) parents and Louisa Glasson's (Caroline Catz) father finally show up and explain a lot about why Martin and Louisa are the way they are. Patty and Chesla also cover Al Large (Joe Absolom) and Bert Large's (Ian McNeice) own paternity scare, Louisa’s complicated history with Danny Steel (Tristan Sturrock), and the two-part "On the Edge" hostage story that Patty and Chesla have a fundamental disagreement on. Plus: a full Doc Martin vs. Best Medicine face-off, a Britishisms tangent, a tribute to the late Sam Neill, and the line Chesla's been dying to use on someone in real life.

Martin Clunes, by Philippa Braithwaite (aka, Lady Clunes)

I just watched this video, interviewing Philippa (Mrs Clunes, or Lady Clunes as Martin calls her) for Season 6.

It really struck a chord as to one of the reasons writing Doc Martin fan fiction is so hard. In the world of writing, you want to show the readers through description more than you want to tell them. For example, "Martin's brows furrowed, a sharp 11 forming between them, as he looked at Penhale" vs. "Martin looked at Penhale as if the man were an idiot."

Because Martin is such a superior actor, he really does carry off so much of what happens with a look. And each look is subtly different and really hard to describe without seeming strange (at least for me, a novice writer). There is the brow, the eyebrows, the shape of the eyes, whether the mouth is scowling or curled in disgust.

Thoughts?
