How Much Do Players Get Paid in the Playoffs?

How much do players get paid in the playoffs

Matthew Z. · Apr 30, 2026 · The Hockey Writers (*This archive was originally written by Jeff Seide)

This article is interesting & informative and answered a question I had. Which is playing in playoffs helps you with your next contract. But it’s not much pay in terms of each players share of “the playoff fund”. There’s no additional salary. I just think of the players out there putting it all on the line & risking injury for glory & future reward.

I think the closing sentence kind of tips you off to how good the pay structure is for the playoffs.

—“Ask any player and they’ll tell you money isn’t the reason they play. Their ultimate goal is to have their name engraved on the Stanley Cup and to earn a Stanley Cup ring. And that’s priceless.”—

Highlights:

—“Next season, when the new CBA – which was extended on June 27, 2025 – comes into effect, the Playoff Fund will get a substantial increase of $10 million and will increase $2 million every season after that. The league will also pay all of it, rather than just $12 million, and it will be considered off-share and not part of hockey-related revenue.”

—“NHL players do not get paid a separate salary for playing in the postseason. League rules actually prohibit NHL teams from paying their players bonuses for making the playoffs and winning the Stanley Cup. Only players on entry-level contracts and those over the age of 35 are permitted to have bonuses for playoff performances.”

—“players still receive compensation for a playoff appearance. The NHL and NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) agree to set aside a playoff bonus pool to be distributed to each playoff team based on how far they advance.”

—“In 2025, the eight playoff teams that lost in the first round received roughly $3.4 million ($429,687 to each team). With each team having a roster of 23 players, each player received approximately $18,600.

The four playoff teams that lost in the second round also received $3.4 million ($859,375 to each team); each of the 23 players received approximately $37,000.

The two teams that lost in the conference finals each received $2,062,500; each of the 23 players received nearly $90,000.

The Stanley Cup Final losers received $3,781,250; each of the 23 players received approximately $164,000.

The Stanley Cup Champions received $6,539,375; each of the 27 players received approximately $242,000.”

“The first thing that jumps out at having a conversation with Moser, 25, is his brain. He’s got a lot to share. He also speaks six languages. You see that personality come through in the Lightning’s Bolts Beginnings episode last summer when they visited Moser in his home country.

So, picking the brains of veteran players and using them to improve himself as a player is a natural.

Learn, learn, learn.”

* The Lightning own the highest winning percentage in Game 7s among franchises that have contested more than five in their history, taking a .700 mark into their 11th all-time Game 7 (7-3 in 10 GP). The Lightning are 4-1 in Game 7s at home, with an .800 winning percentage in that scenario ranking tied for third among clubs that have hosted at least three (NYR: .889; SJS: .833; EDM: .800). Of note, Vegas could host one Sunday.

* The Canadiens will contest their 25th all-time Game 7 (15-9 in 24 GP) and 14th on the road (7-6 in 13 GP). Montreal can tie Boston (16) for the most Game 7 wins in Stanley Cup Playoffs history and extend their own benchmark for Game 7 road victories.

A little mild but strangely interesting…

Someone provided inexpert lipreading in the comments:

>"Let’s go!"

>"There it is"

>😐

>"Let's get the fuck outta here"

Formatting won’t work today (it’s literal garbage)

Trying to insert spaces between paragraphs.

has worked always before. Not today.

Space space return also not working.

Bleh. Bleh. Bleh.

Fantastic read:

>This game, at least in regulation, had everything but a goal.

>the vibe inside the building was off the charts

>the final dagger delivered by Gage Goncalves off a wild scramble in front of the Canadiens net at 9:03 of overtime

>”But if you watched the game, that game didn’t need a goal. All it needed was one goal to end it” -Lightning coach Jon Cooper

>“How could you not love that game?” summed up Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis
