The Passions - I'm in Love With a German Film Star

Always liked this one from 1981. It's essentially from a one-hit wonder band, The Passions, and this was their only charting single, hitting #25 in the UK. The lyrics were written by the band's vocalist Barbara Gogan about Steve "Roadent" Connelly, a one-time roadie for the Clash and Sex Pistols, who had minor roles in several German films. It was also included in the GTA: Vice City game on the Emotion station.

After two years of applying, finally, an interview!

I wasn't expecting it at all, but I got the call this afternoon!

I was just grasping at straws last week and I applied to Costco -- they have these postings on their site called 'always hiring' and they apply to multiple roles at the store, then they interview you to see where you might fit. I applied because I had the feeling that the summer employees had probably left by now and that they'd be looking.

Is it in the field I prefer or went to school for? Nope. But I can probably do whatever job they throw at me and Costco has a reputation of supporting its employees pretty well and paying not bad. And I am exhausted from the search.

I interview Friday (2 days from this posting). Can I get a 'hell yeah!'?

Funko Neil

I was just going through some stuff, and it turns out I have an extra Neil Tennant Funko pop, still in the box.

Does anyone want/need it?

GenX and being told you're overqualified?

This is a legal way for them to tell you they don't want to hire you because you're too old.

Which makes no sense because most of us have spent our entire lives working and building up skills and competence. Why wouldn't employers want to take advantage of that?

Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse here but I feel like this continually needs to be said.

IDL the little plastic stickers on the fruits and vegetables I buy.

Mainly because I usually forget they're there when I'm dialed in on food prep and sometimes they end up in my food.

Stop asking me what my dream job is.

Since I've been ramping up my job search over the last few weeks, networking, working with career counsellors, I keep getting asked what my 'dream job' is.

Am I the only person who doesn't dream of labour?

Like, I feel it's a silly question. I've been working all my life, and I have had many different types of jobs in lots of different fields, so not really a 'career' I've cultivated over my adulthood. I will work and do my part to contribute to society and be self-sufficient, but I don't dream of climbing corporate ladders or making buttloads of money or being in any position of power or being in charge.

I don't enjoy the act of working; there are some jobs I find 'enjoyable' and there are others I simply tolerate. I've been this way my whole life so I never know how to answer this question. I want a job that works with my skillset, that is reasonably stable, has a good workplace cliamte and pays me enough that I can survive and maybe thrive a little. That's pretty much it.

Tired of getting priced out of data storage.

This whole thing with the drastically increased price of computer memory and hard drives has got me incensed. Datacentres and big computer corps have bought everything up and caused a bottleneck in the market where the supply can no longer meet the demand and regular consumers now have to pay hundreds of dollars more for these things.

I bought a 12TB external drive a couple/three years back, on sale for $350. That same drive is now over $800 -- just about the same price as my computer. I'm a creator and the work that I do takes up a lot of hard drive space; I've about filled this thing up, and I don't have backup or ghost drive because the cost is prohibitive.

I've explored cloud backup (like BackBlaze) and according to my calculations of total data backup size against bandwidth it would take me 3.5 MONTHS to upload everything (assuming I don't use my computer or internet for anything else). So that's out. Backing up files to DVD-R or even Blu-Ray storage is just as expensive and way more time consuming.

So I guess if/when my drive fails I just lose everything. Fantastic.

I'm tired of having this problem -- I'm 53 and I want to work, but no one seems interested in hiring me.

I've worked all my life. Not in a specific career, different fields. I've been under employed since 2022 when I was laid off, only being able to secure part time work since then, a single job which only gets me 10-15 hours a week. I apply to roughly 20-30 jobs a week, all kinds of roles, nothing ever happens. It's got to the point where I just want to give up but obviously I need to work.

And it's not like I don't know how to search for a job. I've got quite good at it and kept up on all the trends of how to be effective in this regard. But it's just not enough, nothing I'm doing is ever enough.

I'm qualified to do many things. I think it's ageism. It's very much harder now to cleverly hide your age in a resume or application process, thanks to all the applicant tracking systems that require you fill in our your details in order to complete the process. So once they see I'm in my 50s, I'm filtered out because they can give the job to some younger person they feel is less of a risk.
