Be Prepared

My parents had Tom Lehrer records back in the 60s and we listened to them as a family. I was born in 1959, so a lot of the references went over my head. I was about 15 or so when I realized the line “If you’re looking for adventure of a new and different kind and you come across a Girl Scout who is similarly inclined, don’t be nervous, don’t be frightened, don’t be scared. Be prepared.” was a reference to birth control!

Most of the other stuff I figured out from articles in our Encyclopedia Britannica or reading the newspaper.

Seafood shop

I’m on vacation along the Atlantic coast, stopped at a local place to get some shrimp. She puts the bags of shrimp (pre-weighed) into a bag, tosses a couple scoops of ice on top and rings me up. When the credit card chirps, she flips the screen over and there’s a tip option. Obviously, I did not tip. F this.

“The answer is…”

Been watching Jeopardy for decades. At some point, the host stopped saying “the answer is” and started calling it “clue”. Bothers me. I know I’m old AF and you should all get off my lawn

Forwarding mail

Bought a house in 2018, tore it down and rebuilt, moved here full time in 2019. Twice a year, I get a mailing or two from someplace like SS or Medicare. I forward them every time. At what point can I just write “not at this address” and return them or outright trash them.

Got this newspaper clipping from one of my siblings. My great grandfather is in the middle of the back row. The pics were taken in 1888 and 1938.

Soviet Life article

I’m curious how many people saw the article about Chernobyl in Soviet Life, a magazine published by the USSR for an American audience. It was an 11x18 format with glossy pages and some great photography. It was cheap, yearly subscription was $10-12 dollars. My parents subscribed, the family joke was it was all pictures of very happy people loving their life under Soviet rule.

Anyway, about two months before the disaster they ran an article about Chernobyl highlighting how safe the RBMK reactors were, meltdowns were impossible, etc. The irony was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
