Guys I got 43/50 on my EPQ and that means I got an A! I’m honestly so pleased considering I didn’t have ANY supervision whatsoever and had to teach myself all of it, feeling very emosh🥲 thank you to this subreddit for helping me through it all!!!

Mystery unknown alarm at 6.06am

Hi guys so something quite unsettling happened to my mum this morning at exactly 6.06am, her phone set off an alarm at full volume despite her ringer volume being low and she also had no notification. This wasn’t her usual alarm, and upon further inspection wasn’t any of the preset alarm sounds either. I asked her if it was the emergency alert alarm, she said it was “a different tone”. I have no idea what this means but it can’t have been an emergency alert as no one else in our house got an alarm, and I also checked recent alerts on the government website (we are in the UK) and it said there were none in my area recently. It took ages to turn off as there was no notification. It’s an iPhone 14, if anyone can give us any advice or put our minds at rest please let me know!

WhatsApp stopped allowing messaging

I’m so upset, my gran (who meant absolutely everything to me) passed away October 2023, and I have messaged her old very frequently since to cope. More for myself as I don’t strongly believe in any spiritual stuff. Anyway, her number was deactivated very soon after she passed, but WhatsApp still let me send messages to her. Then I just went onto our chats (after a few months to be fair) and the option to send a message has been taken away. Our messages are still there, and I have exported the chat and saved it to my iCloud so I won’t lose any messages or photos, but I’m so upset that my coping mechanism has been taken away and the last message I sent her was talking about how I got an interview for university. I feel so guilty for not sending an update about how it went, how I got an offer, how I know what course I’m doing, my new friend group, my new job, so so so much more and it’s eating me up because the fact I cannot send her old number any messages anymore is just a brutal reminder that I cannot update her anymore. I haven’t had grief hit me this hard in a LONG time honestly

Learning additional languages

Hey guys, I’m currently studying SLT in the uk and I’m hoping to specialise in child services (maybe in children with EAL if that is a specialism) and I was just wondering if anyone thinks that learning the most common first languages in the UK besides English would be helpful for practice or if there’s not a huge point? Has anyone ever had a situation where they thought “I wish I was able to connect with this child more”? Please let me know your thoughts!

What do I do in my gap year?

Hey so I’ve decided to take a gap year before going to uni because I’m not financially or emotionally ready to commit to it yet, but I don’t want to stop learning for a year because I genuinely love it. I have a good job that is relevant to my degree that I am keeping up during my year out so I won’t be bored with nothing to do but my brain is going to get very bored not learning or working on anything. My brother did an extra a-level 10 years ago for fun before he went to uni but it seems if you already have a level 3 qualification you can’t apply to do another for free and especially not in one year alone however I would’ve absolutely loved this idea. For context, I’m doing speech and language therapy at uni and would love to do something English related. I also love research and am planning on carrying out another EPQ style project for fun this year.

Second EPQ

Okay, the title is a bit misleading and this may not even be the right place to post this. However, when choosing my EPQ topic I was stuck between two questions which I’m genuinely interested in. I chose one with the intention of doing the other for fun later down the line. Now that my original EPQ is finished and submitted, I’m starting my second project and I’ve realised it would genuinely be a valuable contribution to medical research, and I am planning on collecting primary research to strengthen it so it’s not just a literature review. So, I was wondering if anyone knew what pathways I could take to potentially contribute to actual research during my gap year so I have a purpose/project during the year. I understand there’s limited amounts I can do as a fresh-out-of-college 18 year old, and I’m aware I can publish things on certain forums/blogs. However, if there are any actual programmes designed towards people my age who are interested in research it would be amazing to know about. I’m really interested in research and want to pursue it later in my career so any early opportunities would be massively helpful!

For context, I am deferring a year to do a Speech and Language Therapy degree, (personal circumstances mean I can’t attend uni straight away) and a lot of my research is centred around learning disabilities, healthcare and child development. I am also predicted an A* on my EPQ and my teacher said it was dissertation level - not to blow my own trumpet but that’s just to show that my research skills are strong.

Thanks in advance!
